Just signed up last week, this is my first entry so kinda shy. I am originally from Oahu but spent the last twenty something years in the CA BayArea. Like many locals I didn't embrace Hawaiian music until moving here having been weaned on Classic Rock which I still love. It wasn't until the 70's after listening to Kalapana, Olomana and C&K that I started paying attention. From there I worked my way back to to traditional Hawaiian. I have been dabbling in slack-key and steel guitar off and on for a few years. Checking out this site and seeing how many dedicated players made me pick it up again! Reading many of the general comments have also been inspirational and motivating. Keep it up guys!

Aloha nui from Palo Alto,
Normally we Palo Altans don't associate with mere San Joseans, but we will make exceptions for TaroPatchers.
Of course the Los Altos Hillians, Athertonians, Woodsidedians, and Portola Valleyans avoid association with mere Palo Altans.
Heh...heh...
Remember to join the next kanikapila when it occurs... ...keep a lookout here (TaroPatch) for such an event!!

Mahalo for rolling out da welcome mat, particularly the BayArea local boys. Yes Lawrence, I understand the superiority of our Palo Alto brethren. Perhaps we can discuss this further at Gryphon? All kidding aside, looking forward to meeting everyone in the near future. BTW, does anyone know of any steel guitar instructors in the South Bay area? Got the books, just need a boost... -rich

Best bet is to go over the hill and get some lessons with Bob Brozman (sp?) Why not study with the best? |

Rich, What kind of steel guitar instruction are you looking for (e.g. acoustic/electric, Hawaiian/country/bluegrass, tunings)? Brozman is a fantastic player and teacher. He occasionally has one day workshops at his place in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Thanks for the all the feedback. I have a Rickenbacker "frying pan" lap steel laying in the case and collecting dust. Looking for Hawaiian style, basic theory&fundamentals using G/C6 tunings. Not looking to play like Brozman or David Lindley, just trying to get off the ground.... |

Richard,
Have you checked out the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association website? At the site, also check for Jerry Byrd's instructional materials at http://www.hsga.org/learning/byrdcourse.html
The site appears to be compiling a database of teachers but it looks to have just started. Good luck! |

Aloha Rich, if you believe that Santa Cruz is a mere 28 minutes from San Jose, better believe that Cmdr. Piffle Sir is a leadfoot. Or don't go during commute times. What'cha drivin' Piff? Oh well, I guess I drive like a little old lady....
Keep an eye out on this site because there may be several kanilapilas in the works during summertime. I know I'll probably have one here in the beautiful redwoods in Boulder Creek. (Although mine are rather small.) (The redwoods, not the kanikapilas.) Julie

Sounds like the Cmdr. is airborne as it takes me 2x as long getting "over the hill".
Santa Cruz is a great place and the redwoods are an ideal setting for kanikapila.
Julie, you must be located close to Bob Brozman and Henfling's Tavern....
Andy, mahalo for turning me on to the HSG website. -rich |

Vehicle : The PCV (PiffleCommandVehicle)
TYPEII 1 EACH: 2002 Jeep Wrangler - Way cool yellow.
Actually, I get on 17 at Summit Rd. and I have to be at work at 0600 am. I leave my house by 0530, and all is well. Little traffic that early.
On a side note: I sat on my deck for about an hour last evening, picking out and learning Fran's 'Saimen Slack Key' from Soundclick. Cool little song. For the first time in weeks, the friggin pteradactyls (Stellars blue jays) shut up! They normally scream and squawk at anything. Hell, I'd consider that a great review of his song. I work 12 hour days, and the hour or so I have to 'myself' seems very important some days.
hawnboy: also consider the marriage of steel guitar with kihoalu.. the metal bodied resonator. I've been getting some pretty good slack sounds out of a National Style O.

Piffle - My laptop still mocks me and IBM customer support servicing my laptop is a mockery.
Rich - if you get the Jerry Byrd instruction materials, let us know how it goes. I've heard good things indirectly but have never seen it myself. |
