Hello everyone,

I've been listening to Slack key for almost 15 years now. A good friend of mine gave me a Ray Kane tape and I remember loving the sounds of his guitar and one tune called Hawaiian Reverie. Since then I have bought and enjoyed music from Gabby, his sons, Sonny, Leonard Kwan and Barney Isaacs. Now I'm trying to find music from the Hawaiian singers. I was wondering if any folks here from the Bay Area have a jam party session or a luau in the summer. I'd like to hear and meet more players. Have a great day.

Lots going on in the Bay area Mark...I'm sure you'll hear plenty about it momentarily. In the meantime, check out Cord International's Web site for their recent re-releases of Ray Kane's and Leonard Kwan's old LPs on CD! (Including "Hawaiian Reverie")

My goal is to be able to play as well as people think I can.

I checked out Cord's web site today & now remember looking at this site about 1/2 year ago, just before I started playing slack-key...all good stuff but I remember the song that stuck out for me & got me really interested in this style was Slack Key Hula [ History of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar ]. My foot automatically started keeping time, that's always a good sign for me 'cause that doesn't happen too often.

I think I prefer the old time stuff [ maybe because I'm an old timer ], right now I'm at the stage where I can smoothly play Old Timer's Hula, usually with minimal damage to my ego and the ears of anybody within hearing range. My next project will be Healoha No 'O Honolulu [ I bet this is fairly old as well ], I heard Ted Lau play it on this web site and that motivated me to get the Ron Loo tapes.

Getting back to Slack Key Hula, does anybody know:

1...How old is it?

2...Who plays it?

3...Any TaroPatchers play it? If so could they help me to learn it, without breaking any rules, of course. I sense it may be fairly simple, but I'm not skilled enough to figure it out on my own.

Barry
