I made it to Led's show in Fairfax tonight. Words fail. When the venue and the crowd are right, Ledward can be more than a performer - he turns a gig into a backyard party, just as loose and happy as a human being can be. At this show he had Donley Smith up to play a few numbers in each set, he had a guest dancer up for one number, he brought along a new ukulele (a Graziano Hulacaster) and he was just ripping. He strung together medleys, played songs he'd never heard before, and hit plenty of old favorites as well. On the uke he gave us "Killing Me Softly" and "Whee Ha Swing" among others. On guitar he went back and forth between Taropatch and Drop C. He has a gadget on his bottom string that changes tuning by about a whole step. The last two tunes of the show ("Hi`ilawe" and "I Kona") were in standard, so for his encore instead of retuning he did "Pipeline/Ghost Riders" and brought down the house.

Thanks for the review, Fran. He's a very special person and talent. At times, he plays with such a serious look on his face, then breaks into a smile or bursts into laughter that makes you feel part of the show. Jesse Tinsley |

Wheee Ha! Caught the Redwood City show last (no, I'm not stalking Uncle Led, really I'm not). Big crowd (Hi, Lawrence), Donley played a few tunes both sets, Led tore the place up! I had a peak moment during Led and Donley's duet on "Morning Dew" when Ledward played a few bars of the melody completely straight, and sounded like Lester Young on saxophone - it gave just a hint of the musical depths of the guy.

Thanks Fran. I thought you were stalking me! No just kidding. It is so much fun to play with Ledward. Exciting, terrifying, reassuring. I have learned so much from him on stage and I am so thankful that he invites me to play. It is a true peak experience all the time. He is truly an incredible musician.
