Does anyone have any current Ozzie info? Living in Tennessee, it is hard to hear much info. I have usually caught him at the Hilo festival in July, but he was not there last year and I see he won't be there again this year. I can't find any tour info about him nor new recordings. I always enjoy his stuff and just wondered what he's up to.

Ozzie's doesn't perform much on the mainland. His latest recording is "Remembrance" where he pairs with Steve Sano - great duet recordings. From conversations with one of his good friends, I get the feeling that Ozzie has mucho plate full, and isn't taking on as much extra as he used to. |

Yo,
It's not like Ozzie is "out of the picture" since he just won the Na Hoku Hano Hano award for Kihoalu.
He will be teaching (as usual) at George Kahumoku's Maui Workshop in just a few weeks, and those of us in the S.F. Bay area saw him not too long ago at a Stanford Concert with Steve Sano doing some Japanese/Hawaiian stuff (the subject of "Rememberance").
In my personal opinion Ozzie is the very best Slack Key teacher that there is. He always presents tab (even though he does not like it that much) and is very thorough in covering every bar of the music. He has tabbed stuff for me and taught me as far back as 15 years ago (I happen to be a very slow learner), and I am very happy he has a Na Hoku award now.
Three cheers for Ozzie ! !

I strongly agree that he's the best slack key -- no guitar -- teacher I've ever had. Ozzie never was one who went to the spotlight. But he always was available to people who really want to learn. I guess I shouldn't use the past tense cause "Ozzie Is Alive and Well and Living in....." |

Ozzie also taught an intermediate-level slack key workshop in L.A. back in February. It was excellent. |

I rarely poste "me-toos", but in the case of Ozzie as a teacher, and as an arranger of music for students, I am totally in agreement with Raymond and Lawrence. About the latter point: nobody I have ever come across spends as much time thinking, *successfully*, about ergonomic note to note, and phrase to phrase, transitions. He doesn't let the melody take the notes all over the fretboard, but places them to make it logical and as easy as he can (As Kevin Brown said to Sarah and me long ago, "There is always more than one way to play the notes." and Ozzie finds the optimal sequence.)
Also, for a person who treats Ki Ho`alu as a hobby, as he has said many times, he does an awful lot of work (or play) on the guitar. I am amazed he can work so hard and well at his two day jobs (one as a Hawaiiana dealer) and still do what he does musically.
