Ten days... What to leave in, what to leave out... Any voices of experience on things to take or NOT? Tank tops, shorts, bug repellent, and sun screen... Wait, the guitar (Goodall checked through with a rented road case)...and should I pack the Kamaka soprano uke? or borrow? Easy to carry, but not the uke of my dreams.
And is it tricky to break away from workshops to snorkel and explore Maui? Need to spend some of the time with my significant wife. I know it's not Stalag 13, but also want to get my money's worth from classes.
And don't have a Mini disc or lap top...so should I haul a cheapo cassette recorder--or take my small Denon Dat with a stereo mike and all that hassle? Are other people recording classes? and can we share?
Well, gotta go--to my 12 step meeting for folks who ramble on too much--ya know... OnanOnanOn. (say it fast). Anyway, it's our first trip to Maui...and would love to hear from the voices of experience about camp and Maui. G

You can do just about what you want. Snorkel? - you will be right next to Kapalua (maybe the prettiest little beach in the islands) with plenty fish (and showers, too) and sheltered from wave and wind. Just walk. Sarah and I followed above a magnicent Spotted Eagle Ray for about 20 mins. there. Also, many small fish - it is funny, but there are lots where the keiki are playing near shore, like a fish nursery. Those Mommies would plotz (old Hawaiian term) if they knew that Johnny was playing 1 ft away from a Snowflake Moray eel or Puffer. Also, just up the road a bit farther is Honolua - choke turtles and big Blue Ulua. We got caught in the middle of a fight between two Ulua and a Green Moray. If you don't want to lug equipment (we do), Snorkel Bob's is just next door.
Lahaina/Ka`anapali is 15 mins drive south. Kitty, in her airport tower, is just 10 mins. drive south (wave to Kitty). Drive around and check out the beaches and scenery - the best on Earth.
Lots of great grinds, too.

Gordon, I plan to drag you over to Bounty Music so I can rent a bass amp for my Kona Walkingstick. Bounty might rent you a nice uke for cheap. It is worth asking. They have a web site: http://www.ukes.com/shop.html so you might want to email them and see what it would cost. I also need to get a spare set of strings and some finger picks for my steel. I am hoping Shirley will decide to bring a fiddle, although I will leave that up to her. She has not been playing much since her thumb got messed up.
Bug rpellent? Not nescessary if you are near the ocean. Bugs are terrified of the ocean. Here in Hawaii, people that live near it don't even put screens on their windows. We will have to get you a nice Hawaiian hat, unless you have grown more hair than last time I saw you! My hair has finally grown back after chemo, but I am bringing my hat anyway. Actually the sunshine in Denver is stronger than in Kapalua, thanks to the elevation. Sunscreen is a given, but you can get it here for the same price you get it in Colorado. Maui buys the stuff in BULK!
I know that there are a few guys who record with Sony mp3 devices. I am bringing a video cam and it has good sound quality. In Dec. I recorded some lessons with Bob Brozman. Worked great!
Really looking forward to seeing you and Karen! Aloha, -Konabob

Aloha ahiahi kakou, my husband and I will get there on the 14th, so we'll have some time to relax before the mad rush at camp. We plan on snorkeling at least one time at Molokini, I know, expensive and far away, but I so love the boattrip, and the gentle water at Molokini. And the fish! We will bring our own snorkels, only because those go into our mouths, but will use fins and masks they provide. Or rent if we should want to play around Napili. Careful of that bug repellant, some can make a mess of your guitar finish. One thing we have found to be true is that you'll be a lot more comfortable if you try to get acclimated right away. When you get into those rental cars, leave OFF the air conditioner. Since we have no AC at the hotel, it behooves us to get into that Maui weather and get our bodies accustomed to the heat and humidity. Also, bring copies of some of your favorite songs written out with chords, etc. so we can all play together to the same tunes. (Not all of us know all the Hawaiian songs...) Julie |

Sounds like things will work out...Great to hear from Bob and All...Lookin forward to seein' old friends and new...
And I know I need more Hawaiian songs in my repertoire...will bring a few tunes to offer Pele.
Bob, I am seriously thinkin' about takin a fiddle (for some other homework)...if I do, Shirley can work a time share since I'm gonna be pretty busy between slack, uke, snorkeling and some hiking...
But please, someone else vent for awhile...love the feedback. |

Gordon, My wife and I just got back from Maui on 6/8 (16 days!, not long enough). Being from the midwest I had that pastey white winter finish on me. It took about 4 days to get the tan going, (lots of SPF 30) but didn't dare wear a tank top for about 6 days! I lived in shorts or a bsuit the whole time. We've been hitting Maui for about the last 12 years. I hope to make the camp in a year or two when I get some Slack under my belt (newby-got 3 whole songs down now- woweee!). I can give you some great places to eat for breakfast and some snorkel spots also. I'm not sure how much time you'll have being at camp, but if you or anyone else wants I'll post up what I can (it will be lengthy). Garry |

And all we are is dust-(y voices) in the wind...
Well you said you like to hike. There is some short hiking on Sunday with the trip to Kahakaloa.
This is where the dust comes in...
Wet Dust... that is....
Black Gold... Texas tea... (no wait!... wrong song)
In other words... MUD....
Bring some Rock Sandals, or Old Tennis shoes that you do not mind getting Hawaiian mud all over (similar to Georgia Clay but not as red). You can get some light weight Rock-Slippa's at the Long's Drug Store just north of Lahaina on you way over. The nice ting about the Long's slippa is that you can keep-em-on when you slip on the Fins after Climbing over the rocks at the good snorkel spots. (Strong hint) But they are not so good for real hiking.
I use Teva's most of the time and I bring some of these slppers left over from previous years.
ALSO,
Remember to get you guitar good and damp.
"None em thar high n' dry prairie gheetars loud outs he'ah."
P.S. we can discuss Guarneri's and Bosendorfers as much as you like as I have a fair knowledge of both. (can't play them though)

Well, probably won't bring the Bosendorfer, but will bring the Teva's! Easier to carry, and the Bosendorfers don't fit on my feet. Haven't seen the Guarneri since those darn Gypsies came through last year...it's ok, it was old anyway, and a haunted violin at that. Da wife picked up Maui Revealed today...we swear by the Big Island Revealed--. Darn, this darn book is a heck of a book.
Gotta go, I'm purdy darn thirsty. Any resemblance to any real gypsies is coincidental, and is fiction, and besides that...I made ait up in my head...and THAT'S where all the trouble starts. Yup, this place can be a little rough in here. To post this or not? Wait, don't hit that bu |

But since we won't be in till late Sunday, we'll have to do a make up trip to Mudville.

Well, if your feets wuz extra big, yooze might wants a pair of em Bosendorfer Imperials. I hear their mighty stylish with the white over black at the low end, and only $190,000 a pair!
Was, perhaps, that Gypsy Guarneri a red one?
