Well, seems we will be visiting Hawaii December 23 through January 7. THis time I plan to be armed not only with my guitar (that goes withou saying), but also with a list of people to see, listen to, share with and learn from.
How do I find out what is going on there. I know about mele.com and I personally know two players there who may help also, but you guys sem to know more about everything than anyone else, so let me have it.
Hope to heare some encouraging news soon.

go on line to Hawaii Magazine or pick up a copy at the newstand. The issues usually come out a month or two ahead of the cover date. Pretty good summary of activities listed for each island. If you're going to Kaua'i email Auntie Maria (from Mele.com). She knows almost everything going on on Kaua'i. Your best bet is this forum. Mention an island and someone will know the scoop.

My wife and I run a web site about the Big Island. We usually have a bunch of interesting events listed on the home page: http://www.konaweb.com
I usually jam at Keauhou every Friday (round 10 to 2). Get in touch with me if you are headed our way.
Aloha,

Keith, Chunky, and Konabob,
Thanks for the ideas. Part of the reason for my inquiry is to decide which island(s) to visit. Part of that decision (my wife thinks this is going to be a beach/shopping/hiking trip) will be where the music is. As you may have read from some of my previous posts, i hae had one heck of a time finding ANY slack key music on ANY of the islands in the past. Now, armed with your ideas and those of others, I will hopefully know where to go before I get there.
I know Bobby Moderow on Oahu, Kalani Smythe on Maui, and the McMasters and Titus Kinimaka on Kauai. I will see if any of them will be around during that time frame.
We have no preference for which island. We have been on the above three and the Big Island. I just want to be able to interact with some slack key players, learn from them (formal lessons or informal jams) and learn more about the culture of the music and the people. I wanna relax.
As far as the board shorts, keith, if i were to get on a board, and assuming i could get up on one, I would want kevlar shorts and body armor.....I've seen what is under the surface of that beautiful water, and the prospect of losing some healthy skin to that nasty looking coral sends a chill up my chicken-liver spine....you see, falling off is not an option for me, but an inevitibility. I usually stick to body surfing, snorkeling, and hiking the rugged hills and mountains.
Mahalo for all the help.

Wow Carl
You know Bobby Madero?
You don't need to go much futher than that. I saw Bobby play a couple of weeks ago at Duke's on Oahu. He is one of the best slack key players I've seen and Mauna Lua is one of the best bands out there right now. Super nice guys.
I could listen to those guys for the whole 2 weeks
If you go to the Big Island Konabob pretty much has his finger on the pulse of the music scene there.

Keauhou is about 7 miles south of Kailua-Kona. I do not make ukulele - a really cool Hawaiian bass, but no ukulele. However Dennis Lake makes really fine instruments and he lives on the Big Island. Http://www.konaweb.com/mahina
is his web site.

There have been several TaroPatch guys who have hooked up with John Keawe for private lessons during their vacation over here. Ledward, Keola, and George Kahumoku all grew up here. You should probably not miss the Big Island!
Aloha,
