Best way to introduce myself is the posting I placed on the 13th Fret. That is where I was given the link to here by "Fran" , Here is the posting:

Hawaiin Slack Key is the most beutiful Acoustic Fingerstyle music you can play.

When I first made the transition from electric to acoustic, it was Hawaiin Slack Key I fell in love with. Problem was I , at the time, didnt know about altered tunings! I could not figure it out no matter how hard I tried. All the recordings I had were tapes that had been passed around the family on my wife's side. She is a native of Hawaii.
As it turned out we were going over there for her family reunion. So I approached her Uncle Paul. Paul Kaopuiki, was a great nephew of one of the last of the Hawaiin Royalty. A descendant of the last Queen. Of course as he told it, 'that and a buck will leave you three dollars short for a coffee at Starbucks.'
Well, Uncle Paul saw I was very interested in Slack Key Guitar. His own kids werent so enthusiastic about it. So he gave me the family tuning and taught me how to play Slack Key. He took me out and bought me tapes of the greats of Slack Key.
I later found out he had sat with many of the greats himself, Kane, Pahinui, etc. A few years later I went back to Hawaii. Uncle Paul asked me in that deep Hawaiin accent...'You still play da slack key?' So I sat and played him a few of the songs I had learned. The only one at the reunion that could play in slack key! That was the last time I saw him. Uncle Paul died this spring. Last week his widow, my wife's Aunt came out for a visit. I sat on the porch overlooking a valley in San Diego talking about Uncle Paul, and Aunty Connie turned to me and asked...'You still play da slack key?' 'Yes Aunty, I said...I still play da slack key, and some day I'll pass it down too.' She was happy. God Bless Uncle Paul.

Rod,

Welcome and thanks for sharing your story. You're fortunate to have been started off by your uncle. Like Fran, it was Ozzie Kotani's book that got me started.

Aloha!

Aloha e Rod,

Welcome to TP. What a wonderful and special story that is. You can pass that down, too, as well as the music!
