Aloha, Friends.
My name is Lance and I live in Kailua, Oahu.
Been playing guitar 22 years, but slack for just a few weeks.
I went to last weekends Raymond Kane workshop, and then to the festival the next day. Had a great time and met some awesome people.
I hope to learn from you and wish you all the best.

Welcome to the forum Lance. You'll find this an informative and helpful place to get help learning slack key. Your post caught my eye because I lived in Kailua almost all of my life and moved to Olympia, Washington two years ago to be closer to my grandkids. While I've always loved slack key and other Hawaiian music, I seem to seek it out even more now that I live here. Wish I could have gone to the Ray Kane workshop and festival too. I have gone to two slack key concerts here in Washington (Led Kaapana & Ozzie Kotani in Tacoma and Cyril Pahinui, Dennis Kamakahi, Cindy Combs & Patrick Landeza in Seattle) and I'll be attending a Mark Hanson workshop in Seattle on August 28th.
Somewhat like you, I played the guitar off and on for many years before deciding to learn slack key a few years ago. For me it's been kind of a slow process learning from tablature and I only know maybe a half dozen songs and bits and pieces of several others. But I enjoy it a lot and it's beginning to feel a little more comfortable. Again, welcome and enjoy the TaroPatch net.

Lance, Welcome! Lots of great people teach on Oahu -- in addition to Ozzie, Peter Medeiros, Jeff Peterson - you've got the group classes at UH Manoa

Lance,
I don't know if it's still going but when I still lived there two years ago there were both basic and intermediate slack key classes in the evening at Kalaheo High School in Kailua. You might try that. The classes were fairly small ... like a half dozen people. There were various instructors but the best one in my mind was Walter Cravalho.

Mahalo, Raymond and John.
On Fran's recommendation I've ordered Ozzies book, and will be sure to check out the other ideas.
Thanks again, guys.
