Since Led is on the mainland the Tuesday Kapono's gig went to Alika Odom, who brought in Ryan Tang to reunite two thirds of one version of I Kona. On lead guitar he called on a charming and talented young man named Barry Kimokeo. Barry really has a knack for capturing Ledward's sound and style, and does it in standard tuning. He's great fun to watch since he's clearly having a ball pulling those licks out of his guitar.
Alika twisted my arm and made me get up and play a few tunes (I was hard to convince, yeah?) and I think I may have had a musical epiphany. I've been uke-ing around since I've been here, and at the Ward Center sing I noticed that Kimo Hussey was using some tricky rhythms in his vamps that really made them sound Hawaiian. Well Alika and Ryan were doing something on 12 string guitar and bass that had the same effect - I still don't know how to do it, but now I at least have an idea that _there is something to do_ which I hope is the first step.
So the moral of the story, I guess, is to uke it up for better slack key, whaddya think?
