Man, it's hot outside, so came in the cool of the house to type a little bit! Here's a short-review.

A friend lent us this card-sleeved CD and I wanted to mention it.
The music on this Disc demonstrates some old-style ni`ihau music and specifically that of the brothers Nahale & Malaki Kanahele, Kupuna of Ni`ihau. Nahale has now passed-away, so it's wonderful that this recording was made when it was.
The Kanahele's are joined by Kaua`i's Carlos Andrade on Guitar and by Roland Cazimero on Acoustic Bass. If you've been to uncle George's Napili workshops, then you have certainly enjoyed Carlos' nahenahe Ki ho`alu style. His recordings are few and far between, so it was a pleasant surprise to see him listed on the back.
On this Disc, Carlos and Roland provide back-up for the singing of the Kanahele brothers. This music is slow and sweet; great for us beginners to pick along with. Nahale was pretty nahenahe on the steel; takin` his time so sweetly~

There are just four tracks on the Disc:
  1) Aloha Ka Po`e Koa O Ni`ihau 2) Mai Lohilohi Mai Nei 3) Ka Makani Ka`ili Aloha 4) `Alekoki
Malaki Kanahele Guitar & Vocals Nahale Kanahele Guitar, Ukulele & Steel Guitar Carlos Andrade Guitar Roland Cazimero Acoustic Bass

Not on my "gotta-get" list, but I'm really enjoying the listen.

I agree completely with your appreciation of that CD...and it was in the MELE.COM inventory when it was released, but didn't sell even one copy. Not the fault of the CD, I'm sure -- it's just that it appeals to a small audience.
Good news is, it can be purchased directly from the record label's site. Yay! |
