The latest release from Cord International & Hana Ola Records is Ken Emerson & friends Hawaiian Tangos, Hulas & Blues. Often a name that I forget when thinking of slack key artists, Emerson has been performing and recording on vintage Hawaiian instruments for over 30 years.

As the title indicates, Hawaiian Tangos, Hulas & Blues presents a diverse mix of music. For Hawaiian music lovers there is Wahine `Ilikea, `Ulupalakua, Hilo Hanakahi. `Ukulele fans will love the `ukulele jam titled Slack Key Uku'. Emerson completes the album with 5 originals stretching the limits of Hawaiian slack key and steel guitar playing with latin, blues, jazz, country, ska and reggae influences.

Friends featured include: Darlene Ahuna, Todd Rundgren, Lorin & Chris Rowan, Dave Jenkins, Cindy Combs, Pancho Graham, England's Papa George, & Kauai`i chanter Pa`ula Chandler.

I got a copy of Ken's CD, and I am shivering with delight!

Anyone who enjoys vintage Hawaiian MUST get a copy of this album! While it holds a treasury of other styles (see the title), the two tracks Kalamaula ( sung by Darlene Ahuna ) and Hilo Hanakahi are the very soul of vintage Hawaiian music.

Ken's original instrumental number Limahuli Dream was written for his one time partner - Michaelle Edwards. The song is so emotional! It is as beautiful a song about love as you will ever hear.

Aloha,

Hmmm...liner notes list Michaelle as a co-composer of the mele, as well as the other guitar heard on the recording. Notes further state it "...was written in honor of some very special healing waters. Limahuli Stream...".

It's my favorite track on that CD. Soundclips are posted:
