Aloha kakou!

When Prince changed his name (to the glyph), he was referred to as "TAFKAP - the artist formerly known as Prince".

Well, with a little help from the friendly Admin, "erksome" is no more and my TaroPatch handle is now Puna.

Along with ki ho'alu and 'olelo (both self-study), I have been studying lomilomi with a kahuna lomilomi/lapa'au for over three years, with the Halau O Limaloa. Those who complete the course of study (I graduate next month) are given a Hawai'ian name and go through a naming ceremony.

My Hawai'ian name is Kamakanihali'alaopuna, or Puna for short. So, those who knew me as erksome will need to remember Puna (but, it's shorter and easier to remember!)

And to answer Admin, who noted that I shaved off my beard (of 20+ years) just prior to the first music camp and then grew it back afterwards...'umi'umi a'ole Puna!

Puna,

Congrats on the the changes that are happening for you. Having spent time with you at Camp and our interactions since, I never thought "erksome" fit you.

Hmmm... I had to check http://wehewehe.org/cgi-bin/hdict?l=en which found the following Pukui/Elbert Dictionary(Hwn to Eng) entries:

quote:
`a`ole

interj. No, not, never; to be none, to have none, -un. Commonly pronounced `a`ale (Gram. 2.7). Cf. `a`ohe. `A `ole loa! Certainly not! Not at all! I should say not! Never! `A`ole loa anei `oe i hele i Hilo? Have you ever been to Hilo? `A`ole paha, probably not, perhaps not (polite). `A `ole i ma`ama`ahia, unfamiliar. (PCP kakole.)

quote:
`umi.`umi

1. n. Whiskers, beard, goatee, mustache; tendril; barbel or feelers on lower jaw of a fish; suckers that fasten bivalves such as the nahawele to rocks; rope used for hauling unfinished canoe hull from the forest to the shore. E! `umi`umi kao! Say! Goat's beard! [a taunt of one child to another child who has been scolded, sometimes accompanied by goat-like bleating and tugging on an imaginary beard]. (PPN kumikumi.)

2. Redup. of `umi 1. (Possibly PNP kumikumi, PCP kumikumi.)

Great to meet you again Eric!

Aloha e Puna,

Ho'omaika'i on your new name! "erksome" wasn't "you"...

...and to share a little grammar...proper nouns always are preceded by the particle 'o when they are the subject of the sentence:

'Umi'umi 'ole 'o Puna (Puna is beardless).

but...did ya grow it back?

Aloha

Mahalo for the 'olelo kokua, Sarah!

I think my Hawaiian reading skills are at about a 3rd grade level (I can understand 50 - 75% of your posts). My listening skills are at about a 1st grade level. But, my 'translating from English to Hawaiian' skills are probably at about the same as a 3 year old keiki.

Maybe with less vocabulary ;-0

Kept the beard off for a year, grew it back, and about a month before AMC04 took it off again. This time the mustache went with it...for the first time since I grew it as a teenager. It took some time to figure out how to shave the upper lip without doing impromptu surgery on my lip or nose!

Still getting used to what I look like sans facial hair (so is my wife). But, I think I'll keep it off longer this time.

Speaking of beardless, check out Duke's new look ( http://homepage.mac.com/keithmarzullo/PhotoAlbum1.html )! What a handsome devil!
