http://www.kbeamer.com/ is a good start. Online lessons for cheap.

Also try:

http://www.acousticguitar.com/lessons/Slack_Key/1.shtml

You can also go to tabrobot.com and do a search on Keola Beamer. E' kuu morning dew is available there.

He also has 2 books and a DVD available.

Hope that helps.

Admirable,

How did you learn "the Beauty of Mauna Kea?"

Did you just listen to it and figure it out? Thats one that I definately want to learn.

Any tips?

Thanks,

-Lance

In Keola's C...(the C,G,D,G,B,E)
I really like "Hula Na La'au"
aka 'Dancing Trees'...from online Keola, if it's still listed...
Just the title soothes my soul.
It starts with a sweet low turnaround, and low C hums, and sometimes buzzes! But it's still sweet...

Sometimes I segue into into "Pappas Okolehau" from Keola's small blue book, "Keola Beamer (Teaches) Hawaiian S.K. Guitar..."

Now, since devoted a day last year to break apart the tune...
For "The Beauty of Mauna Kea, break it down into the main short sections and patterns that come back several times... the repeating 2-chord "undertow" were what I learned first, C and G7, tried a couple d minors in 1st position, and then the bar chords for the "moon spins" section to F and G up the neck.

Then I fooled around with the falling 6ths, 3rds and 4ths after the bar chords, and also had to find the passing chords in the "still I would recall, the beauty...of Mauna Kea", which do a G, to C/ G, to a G7...

I did write out a VERY ROUGH Sketch on music staff (in real notes), to help organize and remember what happens when...

The opening repeating chords (C to G7--which serves as the background to the start of each verse), plus the little turnaround, then d minor to G voicing, the bar chord arpeggios followed by the falling 6ths (and other mixed intervals). Also, theres an easy G9 into Dm at "and I could be forgotten".

For the Lift or Bridge "Now to any Land..." it starts with a F6 bar to C (Open), to G, to Dm (Low), then F6, C, and then passing through G, C/G, and G7.

This tune is friendly for those of us new to Hawaiian language, plus the relaxed baritone range, and the combination of doable and repeating patterns on guitar.
Still it's work to do it well.

Sorry for the musicology rap..."Eight years of music college down the drain!"

Simple things can sound so darn complicated when explained in music terminology.

So ignore or use it--if possible.

Maybe there's video conferences in the taropatch future...yea sure, in Andy's spare time!

Raymond,

Not Admirable, but I recall running into this some time ago. I think it's a TablEdit file and that if you have the right kind of computer you can download a free reader. I didn't, so I couldn't...

They are Tabledit files. You can get a free Tabledit reader at http://www.tabledit.com/ and there's an archive of free Tabledit tabs at http://freetabs.members.easyspace.com/ including some slack key tabs (use the "Folklore" link).

Here's what they have for slack key:
