Aloha kakou. I thought I would give a quick (if really premature) plug for the MidWest UkeFest which was held in Indianapolis this past weekend. It was a lot of fun with really wonderful people (no surprise there...) The slant has been toward tin-pan alley and hapa-haole type music, but the organizer, Geoff Davis, is really working hard to expand the offerings with respect to Hawaiian music. In addition to folks like Lyle Ritz and Jim Beloff, he had Michelle Kiba as an instructor and performer (oh, yeah, and Joyce Flaugher too). Also, he teased me all weekend about a special surprise performer who turned out to be Jake Shimabukuro. Anyway, next year the UkeFest will again be held over Halloween weekend, and I strongly encourage anyone who might be interested to come out and be a part of it. You can check out details at www.keystrummers.org/ukefest.html

Best part of the event? Geoff letting me drive Jake around (free private concert from the backseat - woohoo!!!) Worst part? Losing my taropatch.net button off of my uke case at some point during the weekend (Andy... I need a new button...)

Michelle Kiba's workshop was very well done. Good handouts, with a CD of the songs mrdered in the class. I felt like a 3'rd grader playing along with 30 other kids, but the mass singing/strumming of new material gets one moving into the material right away. The Hapa Haole stuff is a little commercial, but it's start.
I plan to go back nest year

Aloha kako all,
Debbie, I got to kanikapila with both Michelle and Joyce in Rhode Island a couple of years ago. We played and danced until the wee hours. About your private concert by Jake, I think I would have crashed the car!
