About 3 years ago I was downloading some mp3 Big Band songs and next to one on the list was a title "Hawaii" I downloaded it and a few days later got around to playing it. Well, it was a happening. I never heard such a great sound in my life. I made a CD and burned the song on it 20 times and just let it repeat after repeat after repeat.
I was several months later that I found out it was something called Slack Key and the song was Radio Hula by Sonny Chillinsworth.
So I bought a guitar and a bunch of books over the internet and started trying to play. (Had not played guitar before)
Just so happened that George Kohumoku was putting on a work shop in San Diego. I went to my first workshop, and found there were a couple other players in the area.
From that meeting I founded the Southern California Slack Key Society and we met once a month in my little office.
Surfing the net I found a guy named Patrick Landeza was only 500 miles away from me and was giving lessons. So up I flew and met a terriffic man and took a few lessons.
Not enough Slack Key in San Diego, so after consulting with Patrick, I set up a series of Slack Key Music Concerts begining in August 2003 and continuing in 2004, I brought in Patrick, Dennis and David Kamakahi, Herb Ohta Jr, George and Keoki Kahumoku, Mark Nelson, Mike Kaawa, Cyril and Martin Pahinui, Geoge Kuo, Aaron Mahi and David Kahiapo to perform.
These great artist also provided some workshops for our Slack Key Society guys.
The Society is meeting a couple times a month now. The members are super people and help a lot in the activities we put on. Many are active contributors to Taro Patch.
A big thank you has to go to Terry and Mary Chunky Monkey for hosting the artist that come into town. Can you imagine sitting in a living room with Dennis, David and Herb while Patrick is making soup in the kitchen, and hear the creation of a brand new song that became "Mokupuni I NA Pu'u" It's about Terry and Mary's home. Translated it means "Island in the Hills"
I still can't play worth a heck but man am I having fun.

Ha! If you believe Don can't play I have a few inter-island Hawaiian bridges to sell you. |
Craig My goal is to be able to play as well as people think I can. |

... and when don gets bored, he composes his own mele. woof.
don is the angel behind the southern california slack key society (a tall order, given the work that others like craig, terry, and bill put behind SCSKS). plus, don has the neatest musical toys.
aloha, keith

Don is simply the niceset person you would ever want to meet. His contributions & efforts to bring Slack Key to the San Diego area are awesome. I'm amazed how he can just "whip something up" musically just out of his head with no musical background. He is truly gifted and has that golden ear for sure. SCSKS has come along way from the tiny little office we all gathered in to hold jam sessions once a month. (AH-hhh those good times & memories right guys?) He is diffently one of the motivating forces behind my Slack music playing. Mahalo plenny Don -slkho |

OK - the secret's out. Sometime have Don tell you about the time he became president of a bank that turned out to be a Mafia money laundering setup. |
