I didn't find a topic on this in Taropatch.net, so it doesn't seem to be old news. It was pretty exciting when I found the link by ToeBone on ezfolk.com.

quote:
Five nominees were announced for the new category of best Hawaiian Music Album: The Brothers Cazimero for "Some Call It Aloha ... Don't Tell"; Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom and Willie K for "Amy and Willie Live"; Ho'okena for "Cool Elevation"; Keali'i Reichel for "Ke'alaokamaile"; and Various Artists for "Slack Key Guitar Volume Two."

So I should know, but don't remember...
Who gets to vote on nominees?
If it's "industry", who is THAT anymore?
Do we get to vote, or voice our feelings to "the committee"?

But no matta, it's good news.
Good to hear ya Cathy.

Voting is by eligible members of NARAS -- musicians, producers, etc.

This is the Grammy's, not our local Hoku Awards -- and the Grammy folks decided which releases were the best, from all releases which met the established criteria (minimum 51% Hawaiian language, for the vocal submissions).

This article from the Honolulu Advertiser gave a much clearer explanation of the work that went into getting this category acknowledged by NARAS:

Another interesting fact is that when you vote for Grammy's -- everyone votes for best song, album, new artists - few categories like that -- the rest of the awards - a huge list - are broken into categories and every voting member gets to vote in only 5 categories -- so it's kind of self selecting. The idea is that only people interested in Polkas will use one of their categories to vote for polkas ... same for classical, Hawaiian, etc. Actually increaes the chances that people who know something about Hawaiian music will vote for it.

Also, when you look at the list above, you will note that these groups are groups with mainland presence already. For example, Na Palapalai was on the preliminary ballot -- but they haven't toured the mainland While sometimes a really great artist/song/album gets deserving rewards, the Grammy's are largely a popularity contest for the professional set and publicity is very important in getting people recognized.

Speaking of Ho'okena, me and mrs. slkho saw them performing along with Makaha Sons this past weekend in San Diego as a part of Tula's annual Christmas show. They mentioned their Grammy nomination with humble humor, and Uncle Jerome (makaha sons) kept teasing them about it with equal humor. It was good to see Hawaiian music represented at the Grammy's.
You are right about mainland exposure, the Bros. Caz, and Willie K/Amy
are out here in California quite a bit.

Is the Slack Key Guitar Volume 2 the same as the one released in 1999 titled Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Masters Vo. 2? I wouldn't think so but I have not seen it in the stores.
