Aloha All:

Last December I took the Pahu Drum making workshop in Hilo, HI. It was led by Keoni Turalde. The class was outstanding! It took us 8 days, working around 16 hours a day, but all 8 of us finished our pahu. We worked outside, at a cleared area just next to Onekahakaha beach. The only tools we had were: 'ohia wood hammers, flat chisels, a wood rasp, and sandpaper. No wimpy power tools here! For anyone who's interested in Hawaiian crafts or musical instruments, I would wholeheartedly recommend this class. They're scheduling another workshop in the Summer. You can also make 'ulumaika if you've the time or inclination.

Aloha,

Curtis Takahashi
