Hello from Volcanoes National Park... Kalena and I hit the Chain of Craters rd lava flow last night... and despite erroneous reports of "No Lava hitting the sea" at 3pm at the visitors center--the lava flow broke through to the sea YESTERDAY! Flow was heavy--two visible rivers of 20 ft. wide (or so) were incessently flowing into at the sea last night. The "Path" to viewing area was POORLY marked, unlike 2 years ago. Almost stepped in an unmarked cooling lava! (So this place can be a little rough, so watch your step!) But the stopping point was roped...and we were closer than 2 years ago...probably within a quarter mile or so! DRAMATIC heavy flows TO THE SEA into the night! Check the Volcanoes National Park site--hopefully they'll get it up to speed today! Ah, incessant budget cutbacks...more rangers and markings needed... Less is not always mo' betta.
Tomorrow, slack key lesson in Hilo! And the Farmer's Market. a hui hou, Gordo and Kalena

Remember to take heavy duty 9 volt flashlight if you go out there. Otherwise no lights on your way back over that craggy lava field. Spoken from experience, one dumb haole |

We're so 19th century... Thanks for the links for pics... Kalena and I only have night photos in our minds... So glad they're techies. We're back in Kona... Laurie Lewis was at Aloha Theater in Kainalau last night. While not known as slack key...she has a beautiful new song about extinct birds of Hawaii, and their voices lost forever. And has a Hawaiian turnaround, of course. So new that it isn't named or recorded yet... Kona Bob and some of the Voggy Mtn Ramblers helped... Nice slide Bob! |
