Techies out there -- I need a quick opinion. I'm tired of slow dial up and my provider finally has DSL available. This way I wouldn't have to change accounts. It is 384K dowbload, 256K upload. Is this good speed. Would it be better to go through hassle of provider/address/website change to go with out cable company for cable service? (I haven't been able to connect with a rep to gett speed info - itself not a good sign.) Thanks

In general, cable WILL be faster, at least on the download. Upload will be a different matter: there are usually system governors preventing fast uploads. No guarantee the system will work as advertised, but I heard from a lot of computer geeks in training debating the merits, including them complaining about the disparity between upload and download speed. If fast upload is your priority, neither system will work out, but the cable should give you at least as fast an upload speed as the DSL. The download is usually 3 to 4 times that. But if lack of hassle floats your boat, go with the DSL. 384 is pretty OK for download speed and sure blows dial up out of the water.

Hi Raymond, Check with your buddies locally. different providers provide differently in different markets. Considering you're currently using dial-up, anything you choose will be wondertul. auntie n |
