I also use Transcribe! on the Mac and would highly recommend it. Among the other things it does, you can use it to slow down and loop a section of a song without a change in pitch. I've used it to save slowed-down versions of a song to my iPod to practice to as well. |
Craig My goal is to be able to play as well as people think I can. |

How do you use Audacity to slow down without changing pitch? Is it trial and error?

Under the effects menu, there are separate choices for
Change Pitch: (without changing tempo) specify note value, semitones, frequency, or percentage
Change speed: (affecting both tempo and pitch) specify percentage or "rpm" (vinyl record rotational speed)
Change tempo: (without changing pitch) specify percentage, beats per minute, or length

I'll throw in another vote for Adobe Audition. In the Apple world, Garage Band comes with any new system and has the desired capabilities..
I usually have to listen using slowdown/repeat, find an optimum tuning, then trancribe using tablature to really learn a song well.

I'm trying to use the Audacity & having trouble getting the Change speed Effect to work. I opened a song in MP3, but when I go to the Effect Menu, the menu items aren't available. The Help feature says I need to have audio selected in order to use it so I don't seem to be doing this correctly. Any pointers? I know this is hard when you're not actually looking at what's going on. Any pointers are appreciated.

You have got to select the section of music, right click and drag. Make sure the selection tool is highlighted (upper left).
The secret is, is this is not a real time processor... it applies effects to selected portions of the song, and calculates a new one, which then can be played over and over.
