While watching the The Hawaiian Legacy Foundation's new DVD on The Sons of Hawaii the other evening the question crossed my mind as to whether or not they perform any more? I'll be back on Oahu later this year and I'd love to see them if they're still performing together. Any one know? Mahalo.
As far as this Minnesotan can determine, the Sons are no longer a regular gigging band, though Eddie seems to put together reunion performances for ceremonial occasions, such as when he debuts a new film.
I was back in Oahu last Nov. The DVD and book had just been released and was fortunate to see Eddie Kamae while doing a book signing at the store Na Mea Hawaii in Ward Warehouse(formerly Native Hawaiian Books and Things).
He wasnt playing music but it was cool to see him in person
The video is a an absolute must to understand the legacy of Gabby and the Sons of Hawai'i. It adds perspective and lays out the history for those of us from the mainland or too young to remember. Eddie Kamae is an amazing artist, both in film and music. In the contemporary scenes, Eddie plays a double-puka uke which looks large enough to be a guitar and is probably a baritone. Does anyone know anymore about it? Jesse Tinsley
