Ok, I know it may be irrelevant to our style of learning and collecting useful music...

But I've been handed a goodly stack of HSG books and sheet music.
Before I ebay some of this, does anyone have a sincere interest in this music, and/or general knowledge about da market?

I have multiples of: Nioma books
1-5, a collection of Keoki Awai's "Superior SG solos, and a couple of decent graphics on sheet music like "Aloha Oe" etc.

Figured it might be interesting to see what happens on ebay, keep a few for my wall and library, and see if cousin bob or anyone is musically interested!
Or have experience/knowledge of the market for these Dinosaurs?
G

The HSG side has been a little sleepy...anyone out there?
If I don't check back in soon...e-mail me through the patch!

Hi Gordon -

I would be most interested. I have a lot of old steel books I've picked up over the years and some of them are pretty interesting.

The ones in the "Peterson System" are very cool -- basically it's TAB just like we are used to. I have one of Keoki Awai's books (I think there are a couple editions) and his arrangements are very sweet.

Anywho, all I know about the market is that I bought three books, including the Awai one, on e-bay recently for a grand total of $3.00 plus $2.50 shipping. From that, I'd have to say that there ain't a huge demand...

I'll zap you a private reply -- but I thought it would be nice to see where this thread goes.

cheers,

Mark

I've also got a small collection of old HSG books. Most of the stuff came off of eBay. Like Mark said, it's a prety cheap hobby. It's interesting to see what was taught back then. The material has a very different mindset than the modern Hawaiian Guitar instructional material by Bob Brozman or Stacy Phillips.

A few years ago I scanned some examples and put it on a webpage: Old Hawaiian Guitar Method Books

Gordon, is there any story behind how you ended up with the collection of music?

I'm reminded that my coolest eBay find was this Hawaiian guitar sheet music for Aloha Oe from the 30's. It has a picture of the enigmatic Genial Hawaiians (aka Jim and Bob) on the cover:

Here's a close up of the picture:

This sheet music shows up on eBay quite often. They must have printed a lot of them. It goes for between $5 and $10.

The Genial Hawaiians recorded about ten tunes in the 30's. Some of them are available on the steel guitar 78 reissues. The steel player has fabulous tone and their guitar/steel duets are really nice. Unfortunately almost nothing is known about them. I created a page with some information about them and links to audio samples here.

EDIT: Fixed bad links.

I will be checking e-mail, so hopefully I will catch up with any of you interested pickers...
I picked these up from a lady violinist who had too much clutter...that doesn't stop me! You can never have enough clutter!

A lady from my neighborhood was (I believe) a violin and other music teacher in the 30's and on...The HSG must have been 23 skidoo...taught in a very music teacher old style mentality and marketed for dreams of kids with visions of fame...
ya know, the miss piggy rich and famous contract...very rare!

The notes in a few places are keen (20's word).
Like $1.25 per lesson...etc...
like a little time capsule.
She lived right near the old Amusement park (Elith's) which is our turf.
There are duplicates of some of the Nioma books 1-3, and a few Aloha OE with a yellow background and green highlights (2 tone?)
--a drawing of Diamond Head and the old hotel--shows no other development... I will know the hotel name once you remind me!
Royal Hawaiian?
I was figurin the tab is sorta like taropatch in A for some of stuff, but they don't do the 6ths across...but I'm pretty ignorant on the steel...
Not sure if there's a Peterson in there, but I'll check...
There's not but maybe one Kamiki, with a pictorial cover, so that and an "Aloha Oe" might be nice to frame and put in our house...
but I guess I need to take a more organized inventory...
If I packaged all of it in small collections I could spend a week on it and make probably 50- 100 bucks--with a lot of energy...
so a few small pkgs to a couple of you seems a good karmic challenge if I don't get distracted...playing in Scottsdale and area next weekend.
Bug me if I slack off here!

I meant near "Elitch's" a great old amusement park in North Denver. They had a great old theater where Grace Kelly worked in the 50's(?) one summer.
I didn't get to see her...but saw Douglas Fairbanks and Victor Borge...Theater still stands, waiting for a special purpose... amusement park and gardens gone.

Anyway, don't expect to find any magic at the new "6 flags over Elitch's", it's this totally different country.
What category is this?
Can we have a "rave on" section?

Gordon:

I am looking for music that can be played lap style, alternating bass with six string dobro.

Gordon - I'd be interested to see those as well if you still have them.

btw, my grandparents had a drug store on 44th & Lowell - we'd go to Eliches all the time when we were kids.

Gordon, either the Royal Hawaiian or the old Moana with the big banyan tree beachside. I'd love to see that cover.

Will we see you on Maui in June? I'm hoping to bring my steel guitar, but since it is a vintage Silver Hawaiian, I may just show up with a cheaper traveler. However, there is something so sweet about playing a vintage beauty, there is so much mana emanating from it. Soooo, I guess I better hop to it and practice what I learned at Aloha Music Camp last February.

This is actually an old discussion. It got bumped to the top because I editted a bad link in one of my posts. I hope no one is confused.

Julie, here's a sheet music cover that's pretty similar to the one Gordon is describing (a larger version is here)

Thanks Gary, what a great image. It sure looks like the Royal Hawaiian. Julie
