In looking at the available Hawaiian steel guitar cds in print, I'd appreciate recommendations from anyone. I've considered getting some of the old stuff from the early years of recorded stuff, but wondered what folks think about what's out there.

There are a LOT of great anthologies ou there. The "Dancing Cat" album with Barney Isaacs and George Kuo offers some very sweet sounds. Historic anthologies are easy to find. Hawai'ian music ( esp steel ) was THE most popular music in the early dacades of the 20th century. |

Memphis asked about early recordings. Of all the collections of early Hawaiian steel guitar recordings that are available, I like "Hawaiian Steel Guitar Classics" on Arhoolie.
It's a really well chosen collection of recordings. All of the key players/groups are represented - Sol Hoopii, Jim & Bob, King Bennie Nawahi, Sam Ku West, Sol Bright, Kalama's Quartette The liner notes are very good.
Listening to old 78 recordings takes some getting used to. If you look up the CD on amazon.com you'll find more audio samples from the album.
Another more modern collection of Hawaiian steel is "History of Hawaiian Steel Guitar" on Cord International.
In addition to some early acoustic stuff from the 20's and 30's it has electric steel recording from the 40's and 50's.
I have a webpage with some more suggestions of vintage Hawaiian steel albums: Vintage Hawaiian Material
I really like the Led Kaapana/Bob Brozman albums too. On those albums Brozman has a different, more modern approach to acoustic lap steel.

I appreciate very much these ideas and comments. Some of these titles were ones I had been looking at but, as in any kinda stuff, there's always a lot of chaff among the wheat and I was hoping to get opinions as to the "good stuff". I do prefer acoustic, rather than electric stuff as well as avoiding overproduced, slick sounding recordings that border on "hooked on strings". I was sure that among the readers here, folks had waded through just about everything in print and could make informed suggestions. |

I'm a fan of the nahanahe style of Hawaiian steel guitar -- soft, not too twangy, preferably solo instrumental.
Within that classification -- definitely Jerry Byrd, newcomer Richie Choffo, the Barney Isaacs/Billy Hew Len CD...and the "new kids" of steel who are included in "Hawaiian Steel Guitar", volumes 1-2-3. |

Thanks Auntie. Your site seems to have by far, the biggest selection to choose from. I'm just looking for an idea of "must haves". |

Herb Hanawahine is an outstanding steel player. He has a CD which is not being distributed by anyone. ($17.00 including postage) To hear a sample go to
http://www.hsga.org/membersrecordings/MembersRecordings.htm
He is 7th one down on the list. His version of "Tiari No Tahiti" gives me goose bumps.
If you want his CD send me e-mail and I'll pass it on to him. |

Two of my favorite sources for Hawaiian steel CD's are
mele.com -
and
http://www.cumquatrecords.com.au/ I have the Andy Iona collection and some of the others. Also Bruce Clarks Hawaiian Hot Shots albums are wonderful. He also has a steel instruction series that is excellent. Comes with charts, and backing tracks! |

Yes, yes, YES to Cumquat Records. Just this morning I sent off my order for the 5 recent Hawaiian releases.
The Cumquat releases should be on the "must have" shopping list of every fan of vintage Hawaiian music and/or steel guitar! |

I heard that Jeri Valdriz on Maui has a CD, but you can only buy it in Japan. Does anyone know anything about this or has anyone heard it? I bet it's fantastic, having heard him play several times. Julie |

As for newer artists, Bobby Ingano's debut album, "Steel Reflections" hits the streets April 18. |

Bobby Ingano's "Steel Reflections" was originally released in 1998 but soon went out-of-print. Bravo to Michael Cord (Cord/Hana Ola Records) for being persistent and getting the rights to bring this great CD back to steel fans! Re-released last month, it's still one of my favorite steel albums. |
