Had a gig this weekend and met a women who was raised on Oahu. She just moved to San Diego from Illinois and in an attempt to "downsize", got rid of about 100 Hawaiian albums from the 60's and 70's. Gabby, Sons of Hawaii, Palani Vaughn, Sunday Manoa - you name it. She did keep Keola and Kopono Beamer, Olomana and C & K. I about passed out when she told me all that she had "unloaded".

The gig went ok. I played for an hour, but it was in a private residence and verrrry crowded. Imagine 50 people in my living room with me in the corner with my amp and guitar. Lots of compliments, but I'm not sure anyone really heard me. Mary said I sounded good, but she's biased because I do all the cooking in our house. |

I'm glad it went well, Terry. Which guitar did you use? Too bad about the albums. |

Playing in that context can be very important, but not for the reasons we would like to think. It's not so much what we play -- it's that the music adds to the overal atmosphere of the party. Adds to people's enjoyment of the social event.
There's another level that your playing can impact a party. -- If things are getting too low energy, i'e; party's getting to be a drag -- you can play a couple of up tempo pieces -- amazing how the part picks up. Also, if things are getting too boisterous, a coupoe of slow, quiet ballads has an equally powerful effect. Part of the service we offer in playing a party. |

Way to go Terry, glad to hear your gig went well. I don't know about you, but now that that monkey, (no pun intended) is off my back, I think I can perform in front of people more comfortably now. Did you feel the same way? -slkho |

This reminds me of a time about a year ago when I played at a university fund raiser event, and I found I could play just about anything I wanted to, and wasn't too nervous, because the level of crowd noise and socialization was high enought that I was more "mood music" than an up-front soloist. I didn't know this in advance, of course, but it certainly freed me up to go for it, and play plenny stuff that I wouldn't have dared to if all "eyes were upon me". It went really well, and I had fun, and as we dismounted and left, I was stopped by a guy in the near crowd, who wanted to compliment me and express his appreciation of my playing. That was very gratifying, as I had played beyond my "stage presentation" numbers.
It was lots of fun, and no pressure!

For Dusty, I used my Taylor. I borrowed Don's Fender Acoustasonic amp and I wasn't sure how the Goodall would sound.
Sarah, I had the same experience. I was scheduled to only play for 30 minutes, but the crowd arrived early and I did an hour. I pretty much played everything I know well and then noodled around for a while. I hit some clams, but no one noticed. I was very relaxed because I realized few were really paying attention. At one point, the crowd got big and loud enough that I couldn't hear my amp. I was dodging the crowd with my guitar neck and forgot what song I was playing. I just started over. |

Sorry Andy! I hardly ever type in while looking over Reid's shoulder, but that's what happened last night.
