Sarah has been exploring the idea of using web-based "stock houses" as outlets for her photos and has uploaded them to various sites. These sites are very peculiar (some of them are masquerading as stock houses, but they are not really). Anyway, one reason I brought up the topic is that there are some nice pix of Maui (including one inside Haleakala) and Molokai. The other reason is that they have interesting twists on copyright and licensing of art - and we have discused that at length here, but haven't considered these variations. You can see the photos at this place, but disregard the prices and ratings (as this is one of the wierd sites and Sarah is just using it for feedback to see how people react).

Stock Houses are agencies that supply photos (usually stills) to anyone for any purpose, really. Usually they are for publications, advertisements, backgrounds, but they can be for greeting cards, text books, postcards, etc. Many museums act as stock houses, but mostly they are little businesses. They have existed almost as long as photography itself.
The 2 licensing agreements that these web sites use are: Royalty Free and Editorial. To simplify, Royalty Free means that the artist retains copyright, can sell the work over and over again, but can not sell the image, but the user need only pay one fee, once, and can use it for as many copies, or purposes, as wanted, again except for selling the image itself. Editorial is more restrictive for the purchaser and the price is correspondingly lower. You can see the precise terms on that site.
These licenses could be applied to tab or music, too, but I have never heard it done.

OK, We have a bazillion guitar pix, but most of them are not on the web (and probably won't be), but there is this..
We took pix of 3 of our guitars and they became the cover art for 3 CDs (actually, there was another one, too). The background was an old white rug that we finally threw away :-) Click on the thumbnails.

Puna, the guitars are, left to right:
1. Made by Harvey Leach: A small bodied, roughly 00 sized "Kirby" model, with flamed redwood top with sapwood. Harvey got cute and double bookmatched it, so that the flame is like herringbone. Body is Pau Ferro, honey with chocolate stripes and swirls. Sounds like rosewood. I got it because I love small bodied comfy guitars and Harvey offered a real deal because it was his first of that design, and he needed pix for his web site. Even though I chose the woods from his private stash, the price was about $1900, and I got it in 6 weeks. Harvey never made a better one.
2. Sarah's flamed redwood (do you think we like the sound of redwood?), flamed claro walnut McCollum Meghann (OM sized). It is just about the perfect slack key combo. "The California Classic", Lance calls the combo. It was the first custom guitar that Sarah ever got and was very carefully chosen. She had it at AMC1 in Puna. Both Andy and I have similar guitars made out of claro walnut from the same tree (although Andy's top is Italian spruce). The tree was a sapling during the Gold Rush in CA. It cost about half of what one would cost now.
3. Goodall Grand Concert. Top is Big Goose Spruce, the famous 100 year old freeze dried log from Alaska that Bob Taylor gave to James. The last sets of Goose had a $5000 upcharge, IIRC. It is now unobtanium. Astounding resonance. Instant vintage guitar. Body is mahagony finished so that it kinda looks like koa. Built in mid '90s, I bought it used, totally mint, from Cotten Music in Nashville for $2000.

Nice pix Sarah! You sure have the "eye" for taking photos! Good luck with your all endeavors in the photo world. Maybe one of these days you can make a cd cover for that Taropatch.net compilation album we're going to make one of these days!!!

I know it's tough with the limited distribution of the CD (contributors only) but guess what? She already did! Well, maybe you mean a real album? But here's a pic.

Aloha e Konabob,
Your buddy Powell, has some great shots. One that is *absolutely spectacular* is on the first page of the Hawai`i album. It is the wave breaking in between the two rocks. Waves are terribly difficult to get right, because, like mountains, it is hard to get a sense of scale. But, this one, back-lit and glowing, is gorgeous and perfectly composed. Killer!
And, we *will* get a pair of glasses to view your brother's 3-D shots. Sarah and I walked all the places that he took pix of (I'll bet that is us on the Kiluea Iki trail :-), and we are getting mighty nostalgic about being there. One other thing that struck us. For the longest time we couldn't figure out where Haleakala was because we were looking at the horizon. Then, one day, we looked *up* and there it was: "The Island In The Sky", just like in one of his pix.
