Aloha e ev'body! Been a member awhile, been away awhile. Way away brah, like try Beijing China. Introducing lotsa Chinese junior high and college (!) students to the uke, Hawaiian music and culture. Bite size pieces, natch. They know about Kuiokalani Lee (I'll Remember You) and the Makaha Sons (White Sandy Beach), etc. The English teaching part didn't take, howevah. Anyway, I'm a long-time veteran of jazz and folk violin and viola, playing for over 40 years, professionally for over 25. I'm also a displaced kama'aina still missing my Manoa Valley (2-time grad of U.H.). Finally took up uke at 45 to sing Hawaiian, and have fallen hard for it, can't be anywhere without it, etc. But I play my fiddle (actually viola) in real paniolo old Hawai'i style...did more than 150 gigs with the Kapalakiko Band outa San Fran. Been performing some Hawaiian as a solo act (voice and electric ukes) in St Pete and Tampa Florida. Also played bass guitar all my life, was in psychedelic rock bands here in the 60s. Back in Bay Area, love to hook up with kindred spirits. Accepting beginning uke students, and looking to jam or form/join good Hawaiian group in Bay Area or elsewhere. Love this site! Tanks, eh, Konabob: yeah, Sam Li'a Kalainaaina (actually the son of the writer of Hi'ilawe)! Thumbstruck: I had forgotten that one! Lawrence: got gig on that day (I have tried each of the last four years, for some reason always get gig on that day...if only all other days were like the Uke Fest day for me he he) And...where's that Gordon Burt fella, another slack-key fiddler... |
