I know they're not new, but I just got Martin Pahinui's "Ho'olohe" and Kekuhi Kanahele's "Honey Boy" and I'm enjoying them both. Martin's voice is so much like Gabby's (what Eddie Kamae describes as "an old Hawaiian voice") , more so than his brothers, and he sings so gently. Kekuhi Kanahele, on the other hand, sings with great energy, even slower songs, and is completely unique in her singing style that is defies description. I chose "Honey Boy" because I thought it would be more accessible, containing some Hawaiian standards, such as "Kane'ohe" and "Uluwehi O Ke Kai". The album is a mix of music and chant by Kaipo Frias. Her other albums are mostly originals. After listening to them, I thought they represented two aspects of Hawaiian music. Martin Pahinui represents a traditional approach to the established Hawaiian repertoire, using slack key, falsetto and an emotional delivery we're familiar with. Kekuhi Kanahele's style is to toss away the Hawaiian singers' handbook and combine her flexible voice, 'oli, driving rhythm, mastery of the language and an in-your-face style. It's amazing to hear. I highly recommend both. Jesse Tinsley

Hey Jesse, I haven't heard "honey boy" but I second your recomendation of "ho'olohe"; it's really one of the best. The singing is great, the playing is awsome and the choice of songs is amazing.

I finally picked up Martin's CD about a week ago and it hasn't left my CD player. I absolutely love this CD. Martin has a wonderful voice, George Kuo is an awesome guitar player, Aaron Mahi is a great bassist and Bobby Ingano on steel simply shines. This is quickly becoming one of my favorites. |
