At this writing I'm between ukes. Need a good tenor before Mid-May... I'm torn between the G-string koa, vs. a Dennis Lake custom... It's a little more $$, but not bad for custom work...who has experience with Dennis's tenor's? (I love his small koa guitars.) E-mail through the patch...or post here.
I know we've got stuff in the archives, but just want some quick easy feedback without goin' searchin' our past discussions.
I played a G-string at Hilo Guitars and liked it...but need to seriously consider the Dennis option if it's not too expensive. And I've got an eye on his smaller guitars...sweet.
But I must sell something or work harder! G

Hi Gordon,
This can be a tough choice. I've seen some really nice G String ukes.
But, I've had a Dennis Lake mango tenor for almost a year now and I love it. I tried a whole room full of different ukes and I kept coming back to this one. So I finally bought it and it was a great purchase. Dennis is a fine luthier and the workmanship is superb. The action is great, the sound is gorgeous and it has a certain perfect "feel" that's hard to describe.
If possible try all the instruments that you can. Everyone has a different ear and hands, so find one that feels right and speaks with the voice that you love. Good luck! |

Hi Gordon, I have a Dennis Lake tenor with brazilian rosewood back and sides and spruce top. It has beautiful sound and playability, however my beginning skills don't really do it justice yet. I highly recommend Dennis Lake's ukes. JlSulle' |

And Dennis and Nancy are great folks and artists!
His spruce tops and rosewood backs may offer some tonal positives, but I'm still enamored with koa... "Mischievous, Marvelous, Magical Koa!"
Mysticism or tourist gimmick, I don't care. I guess koa varies in density-- IMMENSLY! But the good builders must know how to compensate.
Budget, and quality/consistency are big concerns...but mostly these two brands seem like a win/win situation... Anybody want to buy some snowshoes? Will include some Colorado snow. |

kaeri mai,
i have a ko`olau that sounds like a dream. dennis lake's ukes, however, sound as good to me as a ko`olau (within variance of ukes), and once you meet dennis and play his ukes, yo won't want anything else...

Dana, I will make some time to Kanikapila and try instruments after Easter...rehearsals till then... I'm sure I'll like your uke...way too much! But it's great to get to try some of the nice ones.
I'm gonna get over to Dennis's web or call him... can't quite remember the base prices, but seems they were way reasonable. The Martin's are way cute, but not dirt cheap--I'd put my money on our previous subjects! Of course, Almost all ukes are cute, which probably explains why the worst uke in the world gets $omething on ebay!
Dennis L. classes usually build sopranos...I really need a tenor, and I FREAK OUT when I work with wood. Probably missed the line for 'macho guy wood-working gene.' But like many things, it's probably more self-concept and experience. But looks like I'll be on Maui that week.
Nancy, if ya want to build two, I'll give you my power of woodshop-attorney and some koa! But

I'm on Maui June 20-27. No extra, except a night in Honolulu going over.
Dennis Lake is about a year out on orders, so an interim uke is in order, but not yet ordered!
Instruments to camp/// Well, some sort of guitar...won't be a Dennis Lake--because of building schedule-- and I don't know if I will submit the Goodall to the risks again-- but I need someting better than the Washburn. If I can get a decent Grapite (Rainsong?) it might be sufficient. Or?
Also sneaking on a Fiddle or Viola, or 5 string violin... (The low C is still someting I want to explore more for C tunings.) Or maybe slack it lower!
and where would I put a ukulele... Hump? What Hump?
maybe I'll see if there's a checkable case for fiddle that would be ready in time...Calton? Or perhaps a Calton for the Goodall...but time and cost is a factor here.
I wanted to hang out with some of the uke stuff, but I'm travellin solo...no roadie this time. So the uke is lower priority. Wonder if I might rent or borrow? "The roadies all get pretty at gate-check time."
Hmm...must gate-check thoghts. With the exception of Karen, not that many cute roadies that work cheap.
Too much time in the Muddle. |

You should visit the Daniel Ho web site and look at his new KoAloha D-VI "ukulele" . Daniel says he tunes it to his "G-Kilauea" tuning and plays slack key. It even has a Fishman pickup for your "public" performances. |
