Since the statute of limitations is fortunately non-existent here I guess I can introduce myself. My name is Sandy Mcleod and I live in the southern of the self-proclaimed Surf Cities of California. I bought my first guitar in Mexico when I was surfing in Mazatlan in the late 50s but I really did nothing with it beyond hurting my fingers and my ego. In 1965 I received a grant to the East-West Center at UH. I applied mainly because I qualified (a high school department head) and I had never surfed in Hawaii. I got married and two weeks later left for the islands. My new wife had been there in 1953 as a summer school student who learned to dance well enough that she can still do it pretty well for a haole. For me, the East West Center changed my life. My previous knowledege about Asia had been limited to one class in college but eventually I achieved an advanced degree, wrote a dissertation and a lot of other stuff, and had a career in higher ed. I'm quasi-retired now, still teaching at local universities and colleges, and finally trying to get back to that guitar (which is long gone) I bought in Mazatlan. I have a classical guitar and a several ukes and a burning desire to get mo' bettah at playing. The music is always around me, whether I'm skiing or sailing or just whatever, so I guess that can't be all bad. Incidentally, Doug put up with me for an inordinate period of time when I was looking for a new uke. I found it at his wonderful store and when I can afford it I'll be back. He is a good man. Mahalo for staying awake this long, Sandy

Welcome Sandy. Slack key and the sound of the nalu (surf) go together. We're glad you're here. Ditto on the invitation to Auntie Nancy's. It would be nice to meet you. Jesse Tinsley |

Mahalo, Jesse, I'm glad to be here. I replied to Auntie Nancy off the net but I guess I should say it here. I'll be in Cabo San Lucas, soaking up sun and cerveza and tormenting my neighbors with my tenor uke next Saturday. I appreciate the invite and one of these days we will meet. Malama pono, Sandy |

Hi Sandy,
I know you've posted before but thanks for the intro. It's nice to know a little about you. So a belated "welcome" to go with your introduction. |

Welcome Sandy to the Taropatch ohana! Lucky that you live in a very active area for Hawaiian music and have lots of TP'ers in your neighborhood to get together with. Keep on plinking that uke, and enjoy your holidays filled with music and cerveza!

Aloha Guys!
Just remember, everything I tell you is my personal opinion and from personal experience.... just over a year of slack and a few on and off years of ukulele. It's up to you to decide if it works for you or not.
Sandy, anytime you're in the area .... drop in.
Auntie N, ready for another EASY song? I might have a couple.
Slkho, how's your Radio Hula?
Doug

I will say that although Doug has been playing slack key for a short time, he does have a very good ear and skill level. I don't think it will be long before he becomes quite exceptional in his natural progression. As for me, I've "hit the wall" on page 5 of Radio Hula, everything up to that point I can play memorized. Those are some tricky measures on page 5 & 6, and I'm struggling a bit with them, but I'll get them. Dusty, Keith, & Ken have been very helpful in that area. The end is near. -slkho |

Aloha, Rik!! Will you play the 4 pages you've memorized of Radio Hula if I promise to be good? 6 pages more than all the songs I have under my belt all together! I've figured out what the chords are for the open and closed positions so that makes a lot more sense. We'll have to catch Sandy when he gets back from Cabo - it's 20 degrees warmer down there today!! Practice, Kani ka pila, Practice, Kani ka Pila!!! aloha - n |
