okay gang,
how do you play hi`ilawe? do you play it in drop C? in G? what's your favorite pa`ani?
sarah, would you be willing to divulge the chords you use? kevin showed me once, but i forgot `em
i play it in C, and my favorite pa`ani is parallel sixths on the low D and G strings. with just the parallel notes: --2-1- --3-3- --5-5- --7-6- --5-5- --3-3- --2-1- (played sorta fancy like), and then i end with descending thirds: ----67 ----55 ----33 ----00 ----12
kumaka ka `ikena ia hi`ilawe, ka papa lohi mai a`o maukele keith

I have no wisdom to offer, but... I say play it where you can sing it. But I know Gabby usually played it in C Maunaloa or something close. I just transferred Johnny Almeida's version from 78 rpm to computer. He sings it like Al Jolson! It makes you glad the Hawaiian renaissance brought us the folk style of singing we associate with that song. Jesse Tinsley |

Keith,
I play it in both keys, but G is better for me to sing in. It's actually pretty sweet in Double Slack

I play it in drop C.
Can also play the usual open and closed positions on the 1st and 3rd strings. (Just like taro patch, I think, but up 4 frets?) |

Dusty,
Gosh, I wonder? Were we ever in a hula band together?

Until Sarah gets free, I'll just say that she plays it in Double Slack in the "old" style, with embellishments, and sings the "old" melody.
When I hack it up, I play Ozzie's version in Leonard's C. Of course, I don't sing it (can't sing anything well, actually).

Aloha kakou,
I play it in Double Slack (G Wahine), and what I play is a variation of Auntie Alice figures, where I incorporate a little of the D-E-F#-G run like you hear in Punahele. I sing the old melody, which has a variation I sing on the repeat of the verse. For the pa'ani, I play through the figures with a little extra ornamentation. The figures are patterns around the chords G and D7. None of the guitar part plays the song melody, which is part of the idea of the figures: they are background harmony.
In Keola's instructional video/dvd, there's a brief part there where he explains how his grandmother (I think) sang the song "over a figure" and gives a very brief demo... it's the same idea.
Oh, and I play it capoed up to A, which is better for my voice
aloha, Sarah |

Hey... that was the best I ever looked in a Hula Band!
(even with the pallid sallow-shaded ashen legs)
And as I recall... That was (after) the TRAIN WRECK rehearsal!!!
(P.S. Dusty - could you send me the HI-RES photo?)

Actually, Sheila took it at the student performance. We only had a 2 megapixel camera. So, don't expect a great pic - it's only about 300K bytes. Here the link. The link is dead now. I had to take the picture down. Sorry.
Get it now. I can't leave it up too long. |

Thanks Dusty AND Sheila,
I don't remember a Train Wreck. Oh, wait, the caboose at stage left slipped the track while the conductor was looking the other way.

It may not have been a train wreck for y'all, but notice who's staring down at her guitar in fear and loathing......... hint: she's the auntie sitting next to 'ilio nui. Actually, we did a good job of backing up the dancers, and i have rarely been in a band with such varied and talented guys. Especially the one with the paper white legs, <ahem> not mentioning any names... |
