Patrick knows how to throw a party. The open mic at the Englander Pub Sunday was really fun - nice casual atmosphere, good food and drinks, nice venue. I enjoyed all the "family acts" (including mine ). I was especially impressed by Carey Camacho. I met him previously through an ipu-making class he taught. I didn't know he is such a good slack key player.
Big thanks again to Patrick for organizing this and for all the work he's doing promoting slack key music.

Thanks to all that came to the Englander. Fran opened the open mic and as usual gave a beautiful nahenahe performance. The boy can play.
There's no lack of talent with the rest of the Bay Area performers either. I especially loved GaryA and his son and daughter. Aunty Camacho (I don't know her first name) through doller bills on the stage to the keiki. You should have seen their eyes light up. It was a fun night.

Mahalo to Patrick for the event and to Fran and Doug Wong for playing with me, especially since I misunderstood Fran's tuner and played the first piece totally out of tune. Yep, this is how we learn. Yep, really enmbarassing How kind everyone was about it, too, especially the lady in the front row who insisted that I wasn't out of tune......
Favorite moments; Gary's kids of course, Carey's 'ohana playing together, 'Ilio Nui and Mark, Fran sailing away on his tunes, and Doug Wong playing his first solo open mike, and then Kaena and Ikaika singing a country tune.
It's a bright memory. Mahalo all.

Yes - I think Patrick picked a good space. Nice acoustics, a good stage and backdrop, and an un-cluttered room (unlike some places we both know of). I guess we missed about half of the event, since we were otherwise occupied at the N.C. Uke Fest. Everyone I heard did a great job (and don't let Dave tell you he can't sing well, he's got one nice voice!) The Brown O'hana continued to impress with some "experimental" country and other stuff!! If Patick wants to continue doing more "open mics" at that location in the near future, then it is fine by me!!

Patrick, it was a wonderful evening. Thank you! Sure enjoyed sharing all that beautiful music with a group of people so respectful of each performer. Keepin' my toes crossed that there will be many more musical evenings at The Englander.
P.S. Enjoyed meeting Patrick Jr. for the first time and hearing your mother sing! |
