Aloha All,
We are back! Me and Mrs. Slkho, (Puaho)got back last night. Boy what fun...so much to say. I'll make it brief. (sort of)
On Oahu, went and saw Ray Kane, (what a thrill!!!)and his beautiful wife. A few days later took a lesson with Ray. While there, Patrick Landeza, his wife, and his two boys dropped by. I didn't even know he had a second! Cute little keiki. Went and saw Sean Naunauno (sic), saw the group Maunoloa also.
Went to Honey's got to play on stage with Eddie Kamai's band, Eddie was there but was taking a sit down break. What a thrill to play next to Mike Kaawa, Ocean, & the guys. I played three songs, and wasn't even nervous. Ledward dropped by later that night. He didn't have a guitar so I lent him mine...he rocked!! Did you know he walks around with finger picks on his hands even when he's not playing.
Went to see Auntie Genoa, and her oldest son, Mel? asked me to perform on stage but I got too shy. Went to Kapono's to see Led there, but he was a no show. The guy playing in his place, Ethan?, played just like Led. He asked me to come up, but again, I chickened out. :-( Actually, I didn't have my guitar and didn't want try it on someone else's.) Yeah I know, I know... what can I say...so unlike me.
On Kauai, hooked up with Terry, (chunk monk) & Mary, went to see Doug McMaster's. (This time I had my guitar but didn't get a opportunity to play). He played some beautiful nahenahe slack and recognized the SDSKS..nice props. Later on, we all met again at the Kauai Music Festival. Some promising new talents played as well as, Willie K, Sista Robbie, John Cruz, Jake Shimibakuro (sic), also three fellas who were involved with, and played on the Grammy Slack Key compilation, (i'm so sorry, i'm crappy with names) They didn't play slack key though, but some Spanish classical stuff, (yawn!).
Later on, visited the Kokee Banana Polka Festival, (i'm not kidding, that's the name) fortunately there was no Polka playing. There was Bluegrass which was puzzling. I can just picture it now, ancient Hawaiians doing two-step along with kick steps in their dancing. ha.
Cindy Combs, and Harry something, (sorry C.R.S.) played wonderful slack key. Also, another performer from Las Vegas played, (I don't remember his name either...sorry). One highlight was that his Dad, is one of the last original Hawaiian cowboys back in the Gabby/Sonny days. He came on stage and played some really nice slack key. Interesting fellow to talk to. Such wonderful stories.
Of course, the original reason for this vacation was for our 20th wedding anniversary, which is the ultimate thrill. Its been a wonderful journey with Puaho let me tell you. She is very special in my heart. (and Zoom)
Speaking of Zoom, I pick him up today. I'm told he's been climbing the walls wanting to run some trails. That's my boy, hope he doesn't hump leg in his excitment. Yuk.
The rest of our stay was visiting friends, family, eating lot's & lot's of food. Sooooo Ono!!!
I only had one chance to hike, and that was up crappy diamond head. Speed hiked up that in 12 minutes.
Terry & Mary did a lot of hiking, (those lucky buggers) next trip that's all I'll do you'll see.
...inhale...exhale...whew!

Hope to see all the SDSKS gang at Bill's kanikapila this Saturday. I will urge anybody who can make to come.
pau.

Sorry our schedules didn't mesh -- I really wanted to meet you and the others. Next time...

Let me make one small correction, 'kay? Our annual festival is Banana Poka -- fighting the invasive poka plant which chokes out native forests. No polka dancing involved!
We're fortunate to have island musicians who donate their time and talent, and their music is welcome (regardless of genre).

And I'll fill in some blanks...the Las Vegas player was none other than slack key great, Gary Haleamau (now a resident of Las Vegas):

Belated Happy Anniversary wishes!!

Mahalo Auntie,
I went looking for you at the booth, but I either missed you, or you weren't there. Thanks for clearing up the names thingee. I'm so lousy with names. :-(
It was Gary's father, Karren (sic) who was the paniolo that played on stage with him....he was so cool.
What was Harry's last name?...it was Japanese, but I didn't get it.
Good to know it wasn't polka, somehow Ipu's and accordians didn't sound right.

Slkho,
Howzit - we'll miss the gig at Bill and Vickie's. We're hosting a party for friends who are moving to New Zealand next week.

Karl,
Your are correct, I can't. In fact, I kinda suck at it.
I'm not good like you guys, but it doesn't mean I can't have a good time playing.
Remember my mantra: Everyday is a gift, live life, and enjoy the wonder of everything.
Now I heard you can play awesome.
