Dale "The Hawk" Velzy passed away at 77, on May 26th. In my youth (13) he was like a second father to me. As surfboard shapers go, He was the grand master of us all.

There will be a celebration of his life and a paddle out at Dohney State Beach on June 14th. at 3pm.

"The Hawk has fallen, but his legacy will soar forever"

Mahalo Bing,
I am headed for Dive 'n' Surf to see Jocko this AM and will pass the word. But there are almost all youngsters in there now... I used to have a Velzy board...
and I'll pass on the paddle since I'm leaving a couple hours later for Honolulu for a few days before CAMP.
Howzit up in the pine trees?
aloha!!

Auwe, this is sad news.

I surf (and shape a little bit) and Velzy is as much a figure to me as Gabby Pahinui, David Keli'i and others are on the music end.

Bing, you are too!

Thanks for the info. My condolences to one of the greats that haunt my memories of surfing. Believe it or not I still have my first 2 surfboards I bought back in the 60's with money earned from a paper route, a 10' Velzy surfboard from Sears and a 9'6" Hansen Featherweight from Surfline Hawaii. I think I'll go float around down at Waikiki in honor of "The Hawk".

One of the great shapers leaving has left us all a little bit sad. His boards were definitely the one to ride when I was younger. I'll think of him the next time I'm by Doheny!
