In some 30-plus years of playing guitar I have never used a guitar tuner. I used a pitch pipe when I first started, but it was less than satisfactory. For the past several years as a standard-tuning player I've used a tuning fork. So, I am pretty much totally ignorant of the technology, but have recently begun to wonder if a tuner could assist in changing more easily between different slack-key tunings. Of late I have either tuned from standard or put on one of the instructional CDs that has vaious tunings. This question has really begun to roll around in my head as I prepare for the AMC, in a couple of weeks--I have seen quite a few references to tuners in people's to-bring gear arsenals.
Can anybody give some guidance to a technologically challenged fellow slacker? Are these things useful and/or necessary equipment for camp life (I almost posted this under that forum, but figured this was as much a gear question as a camp one). What tuners do you recommend, etc.
Thanks
Jeff

There's quite a variety of tuners out there. Here's a pointer to a discussion from last October on the topic of tuners. Personally, I use an Intellitouch. It works well most of the time. http://www.taropatch.net/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2031 |

Jeff,
I use the same tuner as Dusty. Since you're going to the AMC, there will be a plethora of different tuners there. Try a few out to see if they work for you. You're more than welcome to try mine out.
See ya on Moloka`i

Thanks Dusty and Dave.
That answers more than one question, i.e., do I need to get a tuner before I head to camp. I'll wait. I've been doing pretty well without so far, but I can see that I may be going back and forth between tuings a lot there. I'm excited about camp and looking forward to meeting you.

Dusty,
Haven't checked your profile in a while. Nice new (?) picture.
Jeff,
Within a given class you probably won't change tunings that much. Mostly Taro and Drop C. John might take you to open D and heaven only knows the whims of Keola. Der be plenny tunaz to go round. (Ahi I hope)

The Sabine MT 9000 works well for me, and balances nicely on my knee. It's a metronome/tuner combo, and has both a needle and light function. Works nicely on the 12th harmonic too.
I'm new to guitar and ki ho 'alu. Please, what's drop C tuning? I'll guess it isn't C Wahine.
See you on Moloka'i.

Larry,
Drop C is Taro Patch with a C in the bass instead of D. Some people, including Pat Cockett, call it Taro Patch C. There was an interesting thread on this nomenclature about 2 months ago. It is a wahine tuning since the fret board has to be fingered to play a chord, but the normal C Wahine is also known as Keola's C which is standard tuning with a C (6th string) and G (5th string) in the bass.
Hope this helps,
Dave |

Thanks, Dave. It was taken over at chunky monkey's when Andy came to visit a few months ago.

Drop C is Taropatch with the 6th string "dropped" down to C (CGDGBD).
Oops Dave beat me to it . |

Aloha jeff, I have an inexpensive one that I have trouble using. I think those that clip on are really cool. I'm sure there will be more than enough tuners around for you to try out and to use. I think I'll look at all of them and probably ask for a new one for my birthday. and meanwhile struggle with this one - which you're welcome to try too. See you a week from Friday! Larry's coming in on Friday too, as is Dave - n |

Auntie Nancy, try resting the tuner on the guitar, in the valley under your chin. I have used that technique and found it to work better than placing the tuner on my knee in front of the guitar. Easier, and more accurate.

Thanks one and all. I can tune pretty well by ear, so I should be able to get by, especially in class with a lot of tuning going on. Thanks to all for offers of trying out tuners.
Can't wait for dem Ahi tunaz myself!

To paraphrase the "artist formerly known as Gordon":
Q: How do you know when the fiddle is in tune?
A: ...when it's not making any sound.
I have a couple of the Intellitouch clip-on tuners and one of the NEW KORG clip-on tuners. Needless to say the KORG is much, much better, does not get confused and is a lot more responsive. BUT, it DOES NOT have a back-light and becomes VERY hard to see in dim light or, worse yet, stage lighting (from the front).

Rumor hath it that the next generation, due out next year (?), will have backlighting. Methinks I'll wait and just keep fresh batteries in the Intellitouch for now (it LOVES fresh batteries <EG>) |

I have always tuned from my piano until recently when I got curious and bought a Korg CA-30 Chromatic Tuner (about $20 retail). What a difference! I spend much less time tuning and more time playing, and my playing sounds better because the guitar is in tune. The Korg has a display that shows you when the string is spot-on, so you don't have to trust your ear. It can be used with any guitar tuning (standard, slack key or other) because it is chromatic. I highly recommend this device or similar, for any player - unless you have a perfect ear. |
