From an old Kamaka I took the old Schallers tuners apart and cleaned them up. I noticed that there is a small recess stuffed with cotton or some cloth material in each main shaft(terminology?) that goes through the headstock on the string side. This appears to rub against the top inside of the peg hole.
Are these for lubrication, to reduce contact against the wood, or what?
Also, if anyone knows a dealer that sells tuning pegs sets for 6-string ukes, I'd love to know. Gracias!

The little felt pads are for lubrication. They make the turning action smoother, since it's metal to metal at that point, without the pad. |

Thanks a lot! Do the little pads need to be oiled or are they supposed to be dry? |

No, the pads should be dry. You can stuff anything in there, if the original pads are worn down.

Kia ora, Just got the Schaller tuners and the Worth strings thanks Paul. They are great. I definitely think you should stick to these and fit Worth strings as standard also. These little pads!! I can't see that they would have any function unless they held lub of some sort. How can a small hole with cotton wool in it be lubricating otherwise? As anyone tried oiling here? Presume you have to have the thumb screws tighter but should make for a smoother action. |

I'm glad the tuners worked out. The felt pads offset the peg, so it's not pure metal to metal. There were a few times when someone forgot to put them in and the tuners were really sticky. Believe it or not, that little piece of cotton makes all the difference in the world.
I had another customer who used a little bit of oil and it seems to have worked out for him. I don't see any problem with oiling them, as long as you don't douse them. |
