I'm new to the ukulele scene...We'll I've been playing for awhile, but getting more into it now, so please forgive my newbie questions...Are there clubs, workshops, lessons, etc. around the SoCal area? Any direction or insight would be greatly appreciated...Mahalo

And when you are at the Fair on October first - look for other Taropatchers. Doug Katsumoto will be at the Island Legends booth, and Rik Nieves (slkho) will have his booth with his gorgeous hand made ipus. Be sure to get there early. There are workshops all day, but I know many Ukulele and Slack Key are in the AM - look for Uncle Chuck; he's my kumu... I think Uncle Henry Kamae is teaching workshops too. The entry fee includes all the workshops you can get to. Uncle Chuck will be performing in the cafeteria at 1:30 - I plan to be there. And ditto what Craig asked: where are you??? n |

Phil, If you ever get down to Encinitas, there is a weekly "kanikapizza" at the local pizza house on Wednesday evenings. The group just keeps getting bigger. We have several members that have been playing ukulele since their keiki years in Hawaii - they keep us grounded and pass on the aloha. The rest just own or borrow a ukulele, show up, and look over someone's shoulder to read the song sheets, sing, and play -- sometimes we sound real good.
The playing levels are as diverse as the wonderful people that show up. I find someone new to talk to each week, sometimes I learn alot -- sometime I teach. Although we mostly play Hawaiian songs, we throw some Spanish, folk, rock&roll, Carribean, whatever when the mood strikes someone. Try this web site for more information.
