I attended the national fiddle contest in Weiser, Idaho this week and enjoyed a lot of different types of music, both listening and playing. The music jams in the campgrounds go on all night through the week with people of all skill levels played all kind of music. I recommend "fiddle week" as a landlocked alternative to Hawaiian music camps. Just carry a uke/guitar/whatever and you'll find I found a group of six people having a Hawaiian music jam, in the middle of the "hippie" camping area, with a uke and a Weissenborn player, so we jammed for a few hours before I had to rejoin my family. Same at NWFolklife. Also it's good to check the Yellow Pages under "Dance", "Hula". You can find the "local" community and any festivals of concerts, etc that might be happening. |

So shame on me...
never went to Weiser... but, except for a few of them (Mark O'Connor...and a few etceteras), I never LOVED Texas style...and was not too good at the boundaries of CONTEST fiddling... Now Grappelli...that's a horsehair of a different color.
And, Of course, I did symphonies for fun--no boundaries there!
So somewhere in this Grateful Heart there might be some structure. But I never Imagined that there'd be much Hawaiian or other Hippie-side-out stuff in Weiser... Of course, it is closer to Canada than Texas.
And remember, "the closer you get to Canada, the more things there are that'll eat your horse." (Rick Bass)
But given the choice, I'll take Hawaii... |
