In the NYT today, an editorial endorses:
..."a bill to extend federal recognition to native Hawaiians, giving them the rights of self-government as indigenous people that only American Indians and native Alaskans now enjoy."
Senator Daniel Akaka, the first native Hawaiian in Congress, is the lead sponsor of the bill and it may be voted on very soon. Let's hope it passes. It is about time.

An update article in today's NYT about the bill. It has a picture and short interview with Haunani Apoliona (without guitar in hand) and the theme is the common one of "whenever you get 2 Hawaiians together, you get 3 opinions". Also, a graphic map showing the extent of Hawaiian ceded lands on each of the islands: There are more valuable lands than you might expect on Maui, and lots of mountainous ones on the BI.
You can see and read it at:

I seem to remember the big stink because Akaka cancelled his trips to the outlying islands to meet the populace and discuss his bill. Sounded like he was avoiding his native constituency.
On the one hand the bill may be better than what Hawaiians got up to now, but I hope it doesn't eliminate any future options for the Hawaiian nation. And scares me to think they'll now be treated like the Native Americans have been, yikes! The BIA trust scandal alone should make `em nervous.
Akaka himself says it's just a first step on a long road, and that it's not intended to redress any past events.
"Conservative" columnists are howling about the bill as well, saying it's racially segregationist and unconstitutional. Some say Akaka may have voted for missile defense, in a deal with Bill Frist, in order for his bill to get a reading in the Senate; ah, the tradeoffs of Washington!
I tried to download the bill last night, but couldn't get it from Akaka's site. Curious if it mentions sovereignty or the overthrow at all.
Seems like the Hawaiian community is pretty split on the Akaka bill; what about it folks?
OK, enough politics, back to 'C' Mauna Loa!
