(I moved this pseudotopic out of the recording thread.)

Lawrence,

Almost all kids radio shows from the '30s, '40s and into the TV era of the '50s had some kind of decoding device as a premium for us tiny consumers. Even Orphan Annie had a line of Decoder Pins (I admit to listening to Orphan Annie, even though I thought it was icky -and Sgt. Preston was a dork who relied on his Wonder Dog Yukon King to get him out of trouble and...). The Lone Ranger stuff was just part of the flood.

There are lots of impaired memories of those times and those early years of life. For instance, people insist they had a Captain Midnight decoder ring, but there has never been any proof of its existance. Capt. Midnight had a few decoder *badges*, like the 1945 CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT CODE-O-GRAPH BADGE PINBACK BADGE.

My set of Lone Ranger premiums is *very* clear in my mind (the Lone Ranger was very important in my life from age 3 through 8) and I can picture them very precisely. I did make a mistake on the complete description of the alloy - it was immediately after WW II and aluminum was coming back on the market and the Lone Ranger metal premiums were mostly Al. I don't know what plastic the arrowhead was, but it was probably a polyester (Nylon) - it was hard and, since this was early in the use of plastics, and polyester was in high production then (it was used as a silk substitute for parachutes and there was a frantic production run on nylon stockings.)

Captain Video *did* have a decoder device but, as this excerpt says: "it was a "premium" secret ray gun with a flashlight" that shot a beam of light from its barrel. The light beam shot through a lumaglo card revealing various symbols based on the "planets." Each planet had a different meaning"

It is true, that, as with Capt. Midnight, people swear they had a Capt. Video decoder *ring*, but I have never seen any real proof.

Back to our regularly scheduled program...

Yes Reid,

I was about to suggest that this side-discussion, which was not supposed to become an actual discussion, and which was started by Karl Monetti (not me), be moved to another thread!

Nevertheless, who was the first to promote a "decoder ring"? Sounds to me like it was NOT the Lone Ranger show. If you bought your Lone Ranger thing in 1947 (as you said) then you were already a late-comer, since by your post above these things were originated in the 1930's. Yes - and we can leave out anything that was not a ring or ring-like device, since the phrase in question was specifically:

wether "Captain Video Decoder Ring" actually exists.

"specifically:

whether "Captain Video Decoder Ring" actually exists"--------

No *reliable* evidence whatsoever, despite web pages from wherever.

I think somebody should google for the Joan Crawford decoder ring :-) Decode "Mommy Dearest".

There is quite a market in this stuff, BTW, which is why, if a Capt. Video ring existed, somebody would be trying to sell you one, not just tell you one existed.

As to which show first promoted a decoder *ring*, there is no way to reliably find out since every old codger "remembers" a decoder ring being a sponsor premium from every kiddie show ever broadcast on radio, including Tom Mix (which is so clearly untrue that it is ludicrous).

As for decoder "objects", the earliest I have found are those of "Orphan Annie" (for instance: 1935 Radio Decoder Badge). Having kiddies decoding secret broadcast messages was part of the show.

well, you two techies have more knowledge on how to move stuff from one forum to another, so you will have to read my reply back on Jesse's CD thread. And, yes, we cannot believe all we read on the internet, but, in this case, I wish to believe what i see about my dear old encoder ring. BTW, I think Ovaltine tastes lousy, but i have eaten at least a silo fll of Cheerios since the 40's

Karl's post (moved here by Admin)

Lawrence,

I beg to differ. There are few things i remember clearly from my childhood, but the Captain Video Decoder Ring was one of them. Check out this web site http://www.captainvideo.nl/info/captain_video_series.html . The following quote is from that page;
"The Dumont Network (whose demise alone could end this popular show) sold to their viewers such premiums as Decoder Rings, Space Helmets, and plastic copies of Captain Video's weaponry, almost all of which are highly collectable today."
Besides, what the heck would the Lone Ranger want with a decoder ring...all he needed to do was have Tonto put his ear to the ground and that would tell him everything he ever needed to know, including the latest stock market prices.
Wish I still had MY decoder ring. Geez, where's Tonto when you really need him?

Technically, the posts cannot be moved but I've convenienty included it inside your post. That's doable. -Admin

Karl,

Yes, what would the Lone Ranger ever do with a decoder ring anyway (unless he could use it to decode the word "kimosabe" into it's true meaning... "stupid white guy")

And who was the sponsor of the Little Orphan Annie show?

I'll think you will find it was Ovaltine!

The Captian Midnight mystery still continues...

....(but I am now SURE that you can get them out on Hiway 61)

That' not FAIR!!

The codes we were describing used just the alphabet and a perhaps a space symbol!

No way we could decode

with any of the devices in question!

Not true, El Awrence, effendi,

Dave is about the clearest and most intelligible poster in this place. Not only did my decoder ring come up with his major offering:

"Klatu Berrada Niktu"

His post also included dialectic variants such as "Klaatu Berrada Niktu" (note the double a that denotes an ultimate Norwegian extraterrestrial source - or maybe Minnesota) and Klatu Berada Nikto (which, because of the vowels and and the elided consonants) means that the girl from Ipanema was a potential inspiration of Dave's message.

Way To Go Dave!

Dave & Reid,

You two are clearly suffering a case of "Monsters from the Id".
Any minute I expect the Krell Metal doors of your minds to start
melting! Even Gort would be demolished by such twisted thinking,
not to mention Robbie (and poor young Leslie Neilson) by the power
of 1000 fusion reactors applied to your thoughts. Quick!! You
need to drink a Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster as soon as possible
and then recite the complete text of "Furry Starry Widow Mural" to
save youselves!!

Thank you Reid. Larwence, this should make things a little clearer: ToTi emul EStO.

Piff, he wasn't so scary when he was known as Larry (wow, great rhyme)

BTW: Don't be so quick trashing Sgt Preston of the Yukon. With his special snow glasses, compass and decoder ring I could do anything.

Yes - but I do not wish to be your beast of burden, even if you are lord of the "ring".

just call me Ismael... no, no... I mean... Dirk Gently

(in which case we are talking about 2 Million-year-old Mud - with one "d")
