I have a dear old friend who has moved from Waimea (Big Island) to Whidby Island, WA. to be near family. Uncle Tim Monro is a wonderful guy who knows hundreds of Hawaiian tunes. He sings and plays ukulele. In the 60's he had a band that had a "call in" TV show in Honolulu. Folks would call and request a tune, and they would play it live, on the air. That's the kind of musician he is. Now retired, he can't find any one to play with, and it really is sad. If you live within driving distance, and want to learn a whole lot of great songs... it would be worth the trip! He is ready to kani, any time. Give him a call (360-279-8288) or contact me for his email address.

Aloha,

Your friend may be interested in the events on the Northwest Hawaiian Calendar, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/nwhawncalendar/?yguid=133317233 I hear that there's lots of strumming going on in between canoe races.

It's farther away, but I used to commute that route, almost, so he can check out SUPA, Seattle Ukulele Players Association, on their site http://www.seattleukulele.org/ and their message board at http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/SeattleUkulele/?yguid=220764905

There's a group that meets every Wednesday at 1:00 in Edmonds to play ukulele. That's not too far from the Whidbey Island ferry. See the SUPA resources page. We'd love to learn songs from him. Our leader is talking about moving to the island, Whidbey that is.
