Oooooh, Karl, you might not want to open a new topic on recording on this already gargantuan thread, it could easily push this to five more pages or so. But I think there are a handful of simple recording programs for PC. Several people here could point you in the right direction, but I think that Home Studio and Guitar Tracks are some simple recording programs. Cakewalk makes these and several others.
Doug, Thanks for being understanding about my oversight. Your CD sets are in the mail as of this morning. Ditto the CDs for Na La'au Ki'eki'e and the Eugene Taropatch mafia.
If you think you should be getting a CD set and don't receive one by Dec. 15, let me know.
LEGAL MICE TYPE: This might be a good place to mention that the collection skirts copyright restrictions by restricting distribution to a single copy to each of the contributors and is not intended for copying, open distribution or broadcast. Each cut belongs to the copyright holders and the performer. If any of these cuts are uploaded to the TP Soundclick web page (shepherded by cpatch), it's up to the performer to obtain permission from the composer and arranger, if necessary. If someone wants to broadcast any of the cuts, the broadcaster should get permission from the performer and any other copyright holders. The End.

Nice, Jesse!

Doug, did you record using the iRiver's built-in mic? If you use an external mic you can go up to 44KHz/320Mbps and the sound quality is virtually indistinguishable from an uncompressed recording. For portability you can go with a mic like this, which can be plugged directly into the iRiver:

While the iRiver's preamp does have a relatively high noise floor, it's no worse (based on my own tests) than the the noise floor of the $400 M-Audio MicroTrack (which is in turn supposed to be better than the $500 PMD-660).

Craig
My goal is to be able to play as well as people think I can.

Good point. I think Doug used the built-in mic. If what you say is true then most of the noise I heard on Doug's recordings was being picked up by the internal mic and not the preamp. I did not know that the iRiver had an external mic connector. Certainly worth a try connecting an external mic in this case, and if it has lots of output (a "hot" mic) it may overcome even more of the noise.

Free or cheap recording software: Fran's suggestion is good (Audacity) and there are some others. (do a search).

IT'S HERE! IT'S HERE!! Our TP discs arrived today!!!

Abso-f'ing-lutely wonderful job, Jesse! (And I haven't even begun listening yet; that reaction just comes from looking at the booklet and packaging.)

Thanks, everyone, past & present, involved in this project in any fashion; for myself & Lori, contributing to this has really inspired us to play more, and that's a nice side-benefit.

Mahalo, Retro. The compilation is a mixed bag in style, recording quality, singing quality and arranging. But it's full of aloha, too.
This is my official appeal to all to start a new topic for reactions, compliments and complaints about the CD collection.
Is it possible to lock this one, Andy, so that it does not grow any larger and unweildy?
