Aloha e Jesse,
Wow, you deserve a TP medal or something for the size of the job you're doing. -- So many songs to fix, 3 cds, booklets, packaging, mailing, and you're just one person (with a wonderful wife!)... and not to mention your determination to get it out before Christmas for our sakes.
With thanks and admiration for your time and talent and effort,
Sarah

I ditto Sarah's message, Jesse! What a guy you are to take on this project. A HUGE "Mahalo" to you for doing this.

Thanks everyone. You'll discover that I had ulterior motives in taking on the project, because the only performer with THREE songs on the CD set is....me :) Jesse |

Good for you, Jesse. I have always been a believer in the old adage, 'he who owns the ball makes up the rules'. I can't wait to hear all the slack key songs from the many contributors. And, mahalo for the magnificent job you have done in compiling it.

Hey Gordon, Don't get too excited, you may be underwhelmed by the whole thing. My insert booklet, while packed with info, lacks the elegance of Sarah's effort from last year. I need to offer a public apology to Doug (PearlCityBoy) because I inadvertently omitted one of his two songs, and only found out when he looked at the fascimile of the CD cover. I lost track of the songs while moving them back and forth among the three CDs to balance them total length. A stupid mistake, and I apologize to Doug. I'm currently reconfiguring a set of CDs for him that includes his omitted song, but alas, it won't be on everyone's CD set. If permission is given, I'll put his omitted song on my website. Most of the CDs, except for a few, went out in the mail today, but they won't be in your mailboxes until Friday or so. And a little longer for Aki Shimura, who lives in Tokyo. I forgot about Christmas at the post office, and stood in a line for half an hour today. Then I felt the daggers in my back as the postal clerk weighed and tagged 40+ packages while 50 people stood in line behind me. Mele Kalikimaka, Jesse Tinsley |

Aloha Jesse,
Please don’t fret about the inadvertent song omission. These things happen, and they’ve happened to me more times than I’d like to admit, despite our efforts to check, re-check, and then re-check again. I truly appreciate your concern and sentiments, and for going out of your way (again) to burn a CD set for me with the omitted song included. Let’s also not forget that I do have another song, “Radio Hula,” on the original CD set.
Jesse, I don’t want the rest of the Taropatch community, and especially you, to lose sight of your tremendous effort, personal sacrifice, and incredible aloha to spearhead this enormous project. You’ve been nothing but accommodating and supportive to me throughout this whole project. As a first-time contributor to the CD, having never recorded my playing before, and being “technically challenged,” I wasn’t even sure I would be able to contribute anything. In fact, in September, just a couple of weeks before the CD deadline, I didn’t even own a recorder.
With the guidance of Ross (Rossaurus), Lawrence and Cynthia, and the posted advice of Cpatch and others right here on Taropatch, I purchased a $79.00 iRiver MP3 player/recorder and started recording cold turkey in my living room and sent the first cuts to Jesse. After listening to the recordings, Jesse asked me why my recordings were so low resolution (32KBPS), which presented a problem when played with the other, more professionally produced submissions. I checked my iRiver instruction book and found out that I could adjust the resolution settings (maximum is 128KBPS), and then I re-recorded. Jesse took the time to help me edit the re-recordings since I don’t have any editing software. If my experience is anything like any of the other contributors’, then you can only imagine how much time Jesse spent personally helping the other 40-50 contributors.
With regard to the inadvertently omitted song, “Maika’i Ka Makani O Kohala,” I would be happy to e-mail other Taropatch CD contributors a copy of the song once I receive the CD set from Jesse (I currently do not have the edited version). Just send me a note with your e-mail address via the Taropatch link. Right now, I’m a little self-conscious in having the song posted publicly on the Internet, since it is not professionally recorded and it does have some minor (but of course charming) mistakes.
As I finish this note, I remain excited as ever in anticipation of the Taropatch CD set and very much appreciate the fact that if it weren’t for Jesse, we wouldn’t have any CD this year. Mele Kalikimaka, Happy Holidays, and keep spreading the Aloha!
Doug

Doug,
Just to keep in mind next time. I noticed you have a personal computer in your family room. It almost certainly has a sound card in it. The microphone input can be connected to a decent quality micropnone, and using free sofware, you can make recordings that are probably better than the iRiver (even at the highest bit rate). Because 1) the iRiver has a pretty poor quality preamp (lots of clocking noise bleed) and 2) you can record un-compressed into the computer. The preamp in your computer is probably (but not certainly) better than the iRiver one. The iRiver is fine for lesson recordings at workshops and it is, of course, super-portable.
