An uncle of my mother's, David Chung, whom I never met but always wanted to, died this past week. He wasn't wellknown in the Hawaiian music circles, but he was a great falsetto singer. His hanai brother was the great falsetto singer Joe Keawe, who died in 1992. Led Kaapana said that hearing the two singing together was magic. Led also said he learned the song "Na Ka Pueo" from David Chung when he was a kid. Uncle David wrote songs, including a falsetto classic "Kau'ionalani" and the hula ditty "E Huli Makou." People say Uncle David never recorded any albums because he thought the venture would be too expensive. There were probably a lot of talented Hawaiian musicians over the years who never recorded because of the cost. Jesse Tinsley (photo from www.huapala.org)

Condolences.
This once again points out how important it is to try to get recordings of these people. "Oral history projects," student projects at ALL levels, families recording their elders -- maybe doesn't get recleased on CD, but even a cheap casette recording can preserve this precious heritage -- and I believe that the Bishop Museum will be happy to archieve a copy. |

I am currently teaching "E Huli Makou" to 40 kids in NYC's Chinatown. I will make sure they learn that it was written by Uncle David Chung. Tommy |

Mahalo everyone. It's good to note the passing of elders and recognize their contributions however modest. Jesse Tinsley |

Jesse: we played Kahauanu Lake Trio's version of "E Huli Makou" and Kapena's recording of "Kau`ionalani" Saturday morning; all weekend long, I ran into people who heard about Uncle David's passing from that, and they were grateful that we did not let his departure go unnoticed. So I pass that collective "mahalo nui loa" to you, for sharing the information with us. =Gregg= |
