Wound strings are actually nylon strings wrapped with steel. They have a more "twangy" sound on `ukulele. A low-G tuning is still "My Dog Has Fleas", but the G string is tuned an octave lower. In this case, you would need a wound string.
Hope this helps! |

Well, there really isn't any special tab for low G - it's all a matter of how you play the song and how you want to write it on the tab. There is a wonderful website that you can go to for songs in low G. It's from one of the members here. His username is Dominator and his site is http://www.rockslide.org/Ukulele_Tab.html . I really like his site because you can hear the song if you don't know it.
Hope this info helps! |

Brittni, Thanks for putting a good word in about Dominator Ukulele Tabs. I appreciate it very much.
BTW, are you going to be attending the Ukulele Guild of Hawaii Exhibition in November? My wife and I will be there this time. Hope to meet you and hear you play while we are there. Dominator

Aloha all,
Just for the record, I don't think the low G sounds "twangy". That depends upon your 'uke. Also, Worth strings now has an all nylon (well, flourocarbon) set of strings with a low G. The strings are long, so that you can get 2 sets out of one! Also, with the Worth strings, you eliminate the annoying "squeak" when moving chording with pressure on the low G. Most people who use low G use a silver wound nylon classical D guitar string. I would avoid the Aquila sets with a low G. For some reason, the wound strings just disintegrate within days.
Aloha,
Curtis |
