MIKE, no worries dude, no offense taken. I wasn't miffed. As I hold my guitar on my lap, it never comes in contact with waist area, and I always wear a buttonless shirt, (t-shirt)
Reid, Although informative, I'm not sure if you answered my question??? ...you know, I have noticed that these scuffs are lateral, which would coincide with guitar shifting while carrying the guitar. I was thinking of placing a thin layer of bubble-pack next. I figure a soft, airy cushion may eliminate this mystery. I will welcome any other suggestions too. -slkho

Along the lines of Reid's thinking...
are the scuffs scratches or abraisions (actual damage to the finish), or are they something adhered to the finish? Can you (with a soft cloth and maybe a small amount of warm water) remove them/buff them off?
That might help your search. If it is something stuck on the back, it might be moving around while in the case (due to the tiny movements) and look like fresh marks.
If it is a scratch, it was probably made by something sharp and pointy - a pin or staple or nailhead, maybe poking thru the case lining when compressed by the guitar in a closed case. If abraisons, maybe something broader/flat, rough, etc.
Clean the surface thoroughly and then hold the guitar at an oblique angle to a very bright light. Move it around so you can see shadows (of damage), reflections, etc - that will let you know whether scratch or abraision, and the true extent (e.g., whether it can be buffed out) |

PUNA, these are definitely scuffs, not scratches thank goodness, sort of like abrasions in nature. I tried buffing out with a cotton cloth but no luck. I'll try your suggestions, and searches. Thank you. -slkho |

If you really want to damage your finish, bring it in contact with plastic - like bubblepack. Seriously bad idea. Most plastics have volatile components that will eat into other plastics (which is essentially what guitar finishes are).
I wish I could help you more, but this is like diagnosing an illness blind and 2500 miles away.

Are the scuffs worse after adding the t-shirt or just the same? Was just wondering because if a tight fit was the problem, maybe the t-shirt would make problems worse (that is tighter)? Or t-shirt rubbing against the guitar might result in a different kind of scuffing? |

REID, thanks for the good tip. I won't use bubble pack
ANDY, why yes there has been more scuffs with the addition to the t-shirt.
I'm going to remove everything tonight, vacum, and feel around more closely...see what turns up.
thanks guys, -slkho |

I have been thinking about my prior post and a I guess I assumed too much, sorry: the whole idea about the Takamine finish being so impervious is that you should be looking for BIG things that would look like small effects because the Takamine finish is so hard, not little things that wouldn't do much of anything.
So, there should be somethimg really unpleasant that you should look for. Sand could be that; since it, silicon dioxide, is so hard and abrasive - remember "sand paper". Anyway, good luck.

Hey Sikho, I don't have any idea what caused your scuffs but can suggest a good product for removal. 3M makes a wonderful product called Micro finishing compound which I use to polish my polyurethane motorcycle paint work. I have used this product on my guitar finishes as well and it will produce a beautiful shine while removing minor scuffs. If you can feel any scratches with your fingernail it will not remove these but will certainly make them look better. Micro finisning compound is available at most automotive paint suppliers but not auto "parts" stores. Good luck. JLSulle' |

Probably a dumb response, but I haven't seen it mentioned, so...
Do you have a strap on your guitar? Is it loose and bumping around?
If not, then maybe you are eating macadamias while you play, and some fall out of your hand en route to your mouth, bounce off your chest, and scratch your guitar on the way to the dog's waiting lips and wagging tail.
Perhaps we should call Rube Goldberg.

M-M, Nope, no strap, no nuts. I vacumed and went over the area really good, found nothing. I'm going to try either that 3M product mentioned or buff it out, then see if the problem persists. If it does, I'm ripping the lining out and replacing it with something. Actually, Zoom likes almonds. -slkho |

Hmmm, Taylor Case and a Takime. Is it the old "purple plush"? There has been something of an uproar over Taylor not using the purple plush anymore. Then again, Taylors (I believe) use a lacquer finish, not PU. Could this combo be the problem? Send Taylor a question on this...maybe they already know the answer.
