The Oahu Slack Key Festival is on Sunday, August 21st at Kapiolani Park. It starts at 11:00, with our very own Ray Sowders as the opening act!
I'll be the tall, dorky looking guy wearing the red shirt from last years festival. I'll probably be sitting in a green fold up chair as close to the stage as possible, sneaking a drink now and then.
If any TP'ers plan on attending, I'd really enjoy meeting you and chatting for a while.
My cell is 386-6108 if anyone is interested.
Hope to see you all there!

Sorry I didn't see you there - I was the guy sitting in the middle section bopping my head to the music. I only stayed for a couple of hours but the show was AWESOME!!! First was Ray (not Roy) Sowders with BB Shawn and Bobby Ingano. I was going to shake his hand when he walked by me but he looked busy. I will step on a cockaroach in honor of his Hilo tune. Next was Ozzie Kotani with a couple of his students - they all played Kani Kihoalu together. I was so blown away by that. Next was one of Ozzie's former students, Danny Carvalho. Ozzie actually played backup for him. Then came Mike Kaawa with Bobby Ingano, BB Shawn and another guy. No worry, I not going yell at you to get off the road - you can squelch my road rage anytime you want! I must have spent the whole time imploding. I got my t-shirt, I'm ready to carry all of that inspiration with me as I play from hereon. |

If anyone else was at the festival and saw the performances between 1PM to the end of the event, I would love to hear how it went, who played, etc. None of the news sources here on Oahu covered the event so there seems to be a dearth of information on this year's festival. |

Kimokeo,
You can sure say that again. I was quite dissapointed in the local coverage before and during the event.
However, the crowd was good sized and the concert itself was awesome. I only stayed for about 3 hours but saw most of the people that I really wanted to see--Ray (Roy??) Sowders, Ozzie, Jeff Peterson....Just tons of talent up on stage. It also seemed to run more smoothly than last year, with the next act on stage and ready to go quickly.
I talked to Ray for a while after his performance, which was absolutley top notch, by the way....He is really getting a following. When they introduced him as "Roy Sowders" more than a few in attendance snickered nearby me, knowing better and therefore indicating at least a passing familiarity with his work.
It was a great time, and I may try to make the Kauai festival but that will be tough.
I think next year we really, really ought to have a Taropatchers section and go as a group. It'd be a hoot.

You neglected to mention that Danny is only 14 or 15 and has already appeared on NPR. Here's a bio (near the bottom of the article):
