Do you live in Hawai`i and compose original music or have a new film? Got this email from my friend in Australia, who asked me to get the word out about this. Yes, it's totally on the up 'n up:

I am Phil Tripp, the Hawaiian representative for the South by Southwest Music, Film and Interactive Festivals and Conferences which will be taking place in Austin Texas March 10-19, 2006 and attracting over 10,000 entertainment professionals. In the past 20 years, the Music Festival has been the largest and most important showcase for artists (over 1200 performed in 2005) while the Film Festival is one of the top events for that profession with a juried awards &showing of shorts, docos and special films. You can see extensive information at http://www.sxsw.com

I am seeking to increase the presence of Hawaiian music and film as we have done in the past three years through government and industry partnership in Australia and New Zealand--which has resulted in a six fold increase of artists showcasing (30 in 2005) and professional attendees (over 200 in 2005). We have managed to get support for touring on top of showcases, a national stand presence and promotion of our artists and professional companies at this huge event.

You can see proof of this on our OZ/NZ site at http://www.themusic.com.au/sxsw/ with copies of articles and press releases at http://www.themusic.com.au/sxsw/media.html.

We have arranged with HARA to do a mailing to all their members about this crucial opportunity for Hawaiian performers and labels shortly. I'm coming to Hawaii September 8-21 and would like to arrange meetings with interested parties within both industries--I have already set up a meeting with HBEDT September 20) and will be in Maui 9/9-11, Kona 9/12-13, Lihue 9/14-18 and Honolulu 9/19-21.

Though I live in Sydney, I come to Hawaii frequently and have a huge respect for and some experience in dealing with the Hawaiian industry over the years (having produced the AustralAsian Music Industry Directory since 1987). I believe that with the right timing and resources, this combination of showcases, trade fair/exhibition and conferences/seminars offers a critical strategic opportunity to the Hawaiian music industry (as well as the film location and industry as part of the Film Festival). I believe 2006 is the year to start this momentum.

I am hoping to bring together government and industry to utilise South by Southwest as both an export initiative to reach overseas attendees as well as help break into North America through imaginative programs for Hawaii. So this initial email is to canvas interest and ideas as well as propose a local meeting with artists, labels and interested parties in a venue to be determined in:

Kahului-- 4 pm Sunday September 11
Kona-- 6 pm Tuesday September 13
Lihue-- 4 pm Sunday September 18
Honolulu-- 6 pm Tuesday September 20

I am happy to mail you our eight page brochure and registration form / showcase application if you wish but would also ask that, since time is tight for my trip over, you forward this to your contacts in the Hawaiian industry you feel might be interested in being a part of SxSW. Aside from the HARA mailout of music brochures, I will be amassing a mailing list of both music and film contacts.

Feel free to ask any questions or propose and action we can do to help.

Cheers
