Greetings everyone, could someone please shed a little light on the local, national and international distribution of a CD. Aunty Maria gave me some names of some distributors based in Hawaii but I know there surely must be more out there. I know several of you have produced your own CDs and any information regarding distribution, marketing and exposure will be greatly appreciated. I know this is a "Nui"(BIG) request but I got to start from somewhere. The University of Hawaii's radio station KTUH's receives "choke" (very many) sample CDs from musicians from around the world everyday. Is this a good strategy? What about online companys like soundclick? Is it a good idea to sell your CDs through them? Thanks for your time and alooooooooooha!

A lot of guys use www.cdbaby.com, which will put up a page for your CD and carry online song samples. Among the TP.net people on CDbaby are Darin Leong, Bill Neubauer and Richard Kaulele Wasserman. You can ask them if they are happy with the service there. Jesse Tinsley |

Here's what little I know based upon my experience...
Try Hawaiian distributors - if they are interested, you win -- but they will need you to play at various venues to promote your CD -- they are in business, so they need to feel like they can sell enough to make it worth their while.
I have an ongoing gig at a restaurant -- made most of my sales there. Played Aloha Festival, good sales. Hit up local merchants out here where I thought it would be a good fit. -- Hawaiian stores, Borders, Barnes & Noble, few places like that. Sold 9 copies through taropatch.net Right spot plus your performance == couple dozen on a great day, coupole of units on a average day.
In total, I sold a couple of hundred CD's, which I hear is wildly good.
Otherwise, you need someone to help you get into the spotlight, like open for someone that draws a crowd. |
