Aloha everyone,

In an email from Kevin Brown, he mentioned that his daughter Kaena would be participating in a fund raising event for the Maui Special Olympics. I asked for some detail about the event and permission to post it on TaroPatch. Here is his reply:

Aloha, Bruddah Kawik's

"Cop On Top".....is the Maui Special Olympic's theme. On September 1st thru the 3rd Kaena will be staying on the roof top of Kahului's Safeway. She cannot come down until $10,000 dollars is pledged. ( that's the goal.)  Besides enduring the day's, she'll have to sleep thru the nights, a bucket is what she'll use for the bathroom.( it was her choice, she plans to stay up there know matter what.)  The store will bring her food and water everything else she will bring.( sleeping bag, pillow, umbrella, sunscreen.)

Maui Special Olympics is an organization to help adults and children with special needs. The special olympics competition, is held on every island once a year. The money that is raised on maui, will stay on maui. They will use it to purchase uniforms, equipments, and travel expense to go to oahu for the state special olympic, and if they advance they will compete in the national special olympics in the mainland.

No set amount, what ever they want to contribute will be appreciated. They can write the checks out to.... Special Olympics Maui..... And send it to Kaena, P.O. Box 3180 Wailuku, Maui, HI 96793.

Because it's being sent from away (checks) it needs to reach her before she goes on the roof top, so she can hand over the checks to the organization the day she starts.  If they can send it to her p.o. box no later then the 29th or 30th it would be perfect.

Me Ke Aloha
Kevin....
---------------------
Wish I could go to Maui just to harrass her a little, except it would be the other way around. It's a worthy cause. I already got a check off. Hope you can too.

Mahalo nui,

Kawiks

I'm all for it except for the bucket part. C'mon, stay on the roof but bathroom break should be allowed!

Aloha Taropatch Ohana's

Just sending a follow up on kaenas "cop on top" which started this morning at 6am thursday sept.1st. For those of you who followed kaena on our tour this past april, and those that sent there donation for the maui special olympics, we say mahalo plenty.

So many of you from taropatch sent in donations and i thought what better way to let you know whats going on, and that is here at taropatch. I told her before she went up i was going to give a follow up on her progress, and she said to thank everyone.

My wife and i went with her to safeway this morning to help her with all of her things that she'll need for the 3 day camp out on the roof. They put a 5x5 tent on the roof a small propane stove, a few chairs and a lot of sun tan lotion. The store will provide the water and whatever she would need to keep her comfortable for the next 3 days.

She CANNOT come down until she raises $10,000 for the special olympic, I've gone by a few times today ( for those of you that know kaena ) shes really fare skin, i went bye this evening i did'nt know if it was kaena or the tile on the roof, she got really dark brown. The store is about 2 storys high and the last time i saw her she was testing her flash light.

The people in charge of the special olympics was talking with my wife and i and they said they were blown away by the people that sent there donation months before the event, ( taropatch ) they said it was over $600 so within the first hour they made $1,500 which was a grrrreat start, and it was you the taropatch ohana that got it of on a high note.

Every hour kpoa radio station has a live interview with kaena to see how shes doing for the next 3 days. With all that has happen in the world, and the latest with the hurricane, people are still finding ways to give.

The last i heard, that was around 5pm they've collected so far, a little over $3,000 It's 1:40am now, and i hav'nt listen to the radio since 5, so tomorrow we'll see where we're at. Mahalo a nui loa, me ke aloha pumehana.

Aloha e Kevin,

Give Kaena our best and tell her of our admiration. Putting your body on the line for what you believe is in the best tradition of "To Serve and Protect". That's what the best cops do.

me ke aloha,

Aloha mai e Kevin,

Please tell Kaena we're thinking of her each day!

Did she take an umbrella up there for some shade? If not, you might not recognize her when she comes down, she'll be so tanned...

Also, is she the only "cop on top", all alone up there? Yikes!

sending our aloha to the rooftop,
Sarah

I think Ikaika should get up there with her and do a duet of Up on the Roof, being the supportive brother that I know he is. Send her my aloha. I'm just along for the ride. I'm happy that our TP donations got the ball rolling.

You go, GIRL!!!!!!

That's a great idea! Bill it as "Concerts on the Roof Series"... shouldn't Dad help too? Maybe the Waihe'e guys could get more donations for her by performing up there. That is, if she hasn't made it to $10K by then. Ahh, it's so easy to make suggestions for others from afar. I hope it's a fun thing too.
much aloha!

E, just don't haul too many people up on that roof. I don't think that the roof support system was built with a full-blown Hawaiian band with hula dancers, etc. in mind. Funny visuals, though!!
Wish I were there, Julie
