There's a great book, Hawaiian Uke Songbook (published by Mel Bay) which has been mentioned here before. It includes a wealth of strums, how to read tab, musical notation and provides somewhat of a "sequential" way to approach ukulele playing with a definite Hawaiian "bent" and an abundance of traditional Hawaiian songs. The book mentions that a cassette tape of the music is available by writing to one of the authors, Ken Eidson.
I wanted to alert all of you that the listed address is not valid, due to Ken's death in 1999. Here's the response I received from his son, Bill:
"I am sorry to inform you that Ken passed away in 1999 after a brief battle with cancer. He and Ross Cherednik were very proud of the book and worked hard to make sure it was accessible to all levels of ukelele players. My dad continued to share and support the ukelele until he became ill. In fact, he was invited to attend the Chicago area ukelele society meeting in 1998 - unbeknownst to him, he was the featured speaker/guest. He felt truly honored because the society was made up primarily of native Hawaiians. So it remained a big part of his life to the end."
If you own that book, you'll understand the pride that Ken and Ross had in the book was entirely justified. The good news is that, as of right now, Bill still has the music available which is in the book and it's in CD format now. Anyone interested in CD's for the Hawaiian Uke Songbook should visit this location for up-to0date information on availability: http://www.geocities.com/weidsonengineer/keneidson/
Please note that I haven't *heard* the CD yet, so I can't vouch for its sound, but I'm trusting that it will be a real asset to an already great ukulele learning book.

Tonya, mahalo for the heads up. It's a great book for ukers especially and an accompanying sound source is something I had always wished for. I emailed Bill this morning and eagerly am awaiting his reply. Aloha, Sandy |

I just received the CD from Bill Eidson which accompanies his father's (and Ross Cherednik's) Hawaiian Uke Songbook. It is well worth the $5, which I would think just barely covers Bill's time and materials. Every song in the book is played on uke with background guitar rhythm. Bill is very accomodating and very pressed for time right now. He just moved and he and his wife are expecting their first child in a week or so but he is happy to provide copies for anyone who wants one. It takes a little time but it is well worth it. Sandy |
